About the role

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Western Health provides services for more than 30,000 surgical procedures and more than 6,500 deliveries a year. With the exception of Cardiac, all surgical specialities are represented. In addition, the Anaesthetic Department runs a busy acute and chronic pain service, teaching program and is actively involved in ongoing research and audit.

The Department employs 36 Registrars at any one time, rotating through the North‑Western and Southern Rotational Programs and Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine Training Schemes.

The Department has 11 training positions available for provisional fellows and/or anaesthesia trainees not affiliated with a Victorian rotational training program. We employ 4 provisional fellows and 8 advanced anaesthetic registrars with a minimum of 24 months accredited experience in anaesthesia in Australia or overseas. Provisional Fellows are employed for either a full year or a six‑month term and for some streams a full year commitment is preferred.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in on‑going assessment of competencies via college assessment forms.
  • Provide quality peri‑operative care under the supervision of an appropriate specialist. This includes preoperative assessment and preparation, peri‑operative planning, anaesthesia, intra and postoperative medical care and pain management.
  • Perform anaesthetic, pain management and critical care duties as delegated or allocated by Director or delegated Consultant in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Assume responsibility for patient care in accordance with the care model of the ward/unit, ensuring that required clinical procedures are performed with appropriate training and supervision.

About you

  • Hold a MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Have current medical registration with AHPRA or the ability to gain such registration before commencement of the clinical placement.
  • Have completed at least two years of anaesthetic training.
