WHAT WE NEED

A friendly and efficient Ophthalmology Assistant with six months of previous Ophthalmology experience, or a Medical Assistant with the passion to learn Ophthalmology.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Do you enjoy working closely with an Ophthalmologist and being responsible for providing office-based patient care as directed? Then this is the position for you! In this role you will be working closely with the Provider performing ancillary testing efficiently on the Patients and all clerical functions for the Provider as well as assisting with electronic health records (EHR) documentation during patient visits in the clinic.  You will learn how to anticipate Providers needs and work to facilitate the flow of the Providers patients efficiently in the clinic. The ideal candidate for this role will enjoy hands on patient care and working closely with the Provider while being efficient, tactful, empathic, and professional at all times while working up the patients and performing ancillary testing.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Room patients, obtain medical history, and update patient's record.
  • Perform testing as required and/or directed including refraction as necessary. Previous experience with refraction is desired, but not necessary (willing to train but must learn within first month). 
  • Record data for physician during visit.  Accompany Provider during the patient examination in order to transcribe in the EHR the nature of the patient visit. This includes accurately and efficiently documenting medical visits and procedures as they are being performed by the physician.
  • Prepare exam rooms, by stocking and maintaining inventory of supplies.   
  • Instill ocular medications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including the skills listed below.

WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Recognition of the physical exam process and ability to record accurate exams in detail as dictated by the physician ophthalmologist.
  • Ability to use office equipment and phone systems.
  • Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.
  • Ability to problem solve, organize and set work priorities with minimum supervision.
  • Good communication skills.  Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with a variety of individuals and within different environments.
  • Test ocular functions, including distance and near visual acuity, color vision, eye movements, intraocular pressure, pupillary assessment, auto refraction, and lensometry (reading spectacles).
  • Perform ancillary testing using standard ophthalmic equipment such as OCT, automated visual fields, IOL biometry, fundus photography, and corneal topography.
  • Ability to learn new skills as necessary.Interact with others in a calm, friendly and caring manner.

  • Working closely with the Provider with a high attention to detail.

  • Follow well-defined instructions and comply with regulations, standards and procedures.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

 

Two years previous Ophthalmology experience

License(s): N/A

Certification(s):

  • Either a Certified Medical Assistant or an Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OCS) through JCAHPO or Scribe Certification through American College of Medical Scribe Specialists (ACMSS) preferable to have at date of hire.
  • Willing to obtain an ophthalmic certification (COA, COT) through accredited organization.
