Job Summary

The Center for Human Phenomic Science (CHPS) is seeking a full-time RN -Research Nurse Specialist.  The RN -Research Nurse Specialist  administers clinical research procedures as needed or required.

Documents all information as required by the protocol.  Must be highly organized and flexible in order to meet the needs of the various investigators and research subject population within the Center for Human Phenomic Science (CHPS).

Job Responsibilities

1. Performs clinical nursing research functions that are required by the  CHPS protocols.• Manages all protocols at the patient bedside.• Able to provide effective nurse coverage in all  CHPS areas; takes lead role in providing protocol support in CHPS area specific to experience, i.e. inpatient, outpatient, scatterbed.• Understands diagnosis and pertinent medical findings, rationale, goals in treatment, and nursing care in research protocols.• Provides nursing care to research families in a professional, organized manner.• Provides laboratory services when appropriate, including processing and shipping of specimens.• Provides a therapeutic environment through safe, accurate and timely medication and IV administration.• Utilizes nursing processes to facilitate the implementation of the research study and to ensure quality patient care is provided throughout the episode of care.• Ensures that accurate, dependable data is relayed to investigator.• Demonstrates through practice and supervision, principles of infection control and universal precautions, adherence to OSHA standards, hazardous material guidelines, and isolation procedures.• Distributes and tracks investigational medication.• Collects and compiles appropriate data from examinations and lab tests.• Completes research tracking forms and maintains files for clinical studies in an accurate and timely manner.• Communicates study progress and problems with immediate supervisor and principal investigator.• Tracks protocol activity and subject activity in CHPS subject census tracking system.• Uses hospital electronic systems for scheduling subjects and reviewing data when necessary.

2. Carefully reviews all studies approved in the CHPS and has a good understanding of the requirements of each study:

Uses hospital electronic systems for documenting in the CHPS HOD documentation may include infusions, oral medications, IV placements, vital signs and other research specific tasks.Reviews all new research protocols with CHPS  team to establish an understanding of the research protocol and to facilitate the research study.

Reviews protocols prior to the CHPS Council meetings and notifies appropriate CHPS staff or investigator of any potential implementation problems.

Designs data collection flow sheets, and completes data collection as necessary.

Attends/participates in start-up and in-services for new protocols; Meets with study team, provides feedback to study team and other staff as to best practices for successful implementation of the protocol.

Plans inpatient, outpatient, and scatterbed protocols for the CHPS

Has a good understanding of all the consent forms that are involved with approved studies.

Coordinates subject scheduling with investigators, the nursing unit and the medical staff. When appropriate, coordinates with the study team and/or PI to arrange for study visits in conjunction with clinical care as much as possible.

Maintains appropriate files, reviews patient data and findings with Nurse Manager and informs the CHPS team of activities, problems and goals.

3. Initiates and coordinates teaching and follow-up of research programs for patients, families, nurses and medical staff. Provides ongoing protocol education.

 Develops and implements ongoing educational sessions for research and nursing staff. Manages education process for each new protocol specific to area of expertise.

Assesses the need for patient/family education. Instructs patients in those components of the protocol for which the patient is responsible. Follows up with patients and families by telephone or scheduled meetings when appropriate.

 4. Understands diagnosis and pertinent medical findings, rationale, goals in treatment, and nursing care in research protocols.Reviews current literature.Attends educational sessions, conferences, or patient care rounds which are pertinent to current protocols.  

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

RN - Registered Nurse

Required Education and Experience

  • BSN and nursing research experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

 

  • Previous pediatric nursing experience preferred with demonstrated research interest and capabilities
  • Membership in a professional nursing organization preferred.
