    Responsibilities

    The Staff Psychiatrist will provide inpatient and/or outpatient psychiatric and medical care to the veterans presented at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
    - Screen, evaluate and admit or enroll patients to psychiatry programs.
    - Order diagnostic studies for patients
    - Provide psychiatric on-call coverage (this is mandatory for all staff)
    - Provide psychiatric consultation-liaison coverage, as assigned.
    - Prescribe Buprenorphine or Clozapine.
    - Prescribe evidenced based pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders.
    - Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications.
    - Provide telephone consultations with patients and family members.
    - Teach and supervise medical students, PA students, psychiatry residents and fellows.

    This position may be in General Mental Health of co-located in Primary Care as part of the Primary Care/Mental Health (PC/MH) Integration Team.

    Modality of care my include tele-health from a VA owned/leased facility or tele-health from the provider's home directly into the Veteran's home (Contingent upon approval from Chief, Mental Health).

    Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    Qualifications
    The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist
    Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized
    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
