Job Summary

The Polysomnography Technologist Level 2 (PT 2) practices at the level of a competent to proficient practitioner of polysomnography.  The PT 2 performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis and associated interventions under the general oversight of a Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the clinical supervisor.  In addition, the PT 2 demonstrates clinical leadership skills through contribution to standards of care and department goals.  The PT 2 serves as a role model for other staff, a preceptor for new employees and participates in endeavors to increase polysomnography knowledge.

Job Responsibilities

Practice  Provides proficient care for patients and families.

  • Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments, if necessary, including applying electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards, and performing appropriate physiologic calibrations (when age and cognitive function appropriate) ensuring proper signals and making adjustments, if necessary.
  • Documents routine observations, changes in procedure and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Provides thorough documentation during data collection based on direct observation of the patient through technologist’s notes.
  • Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, end tidal carbon dioxide values, respiratory and heart rates, etc).
  • During data collection, monitors study-tracing quality ensuring signals are artifact-free and making adjustments, if necessary.
  • Follows procedural protocols (such as PAP titration, oxygen titration, research protocols etc.) ensuring collection of appropriate data.
  • Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic interventions, such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.)
  • Cleans and sterilizes all equipment after each sleep study as per infection control procedures.
  • With direction from a Technologist or medical staff member, oversees more difficult procedures and therapeutic interventions as indicated based on information collected during the study.
  • Assists with arriving and discharging of patients.
  • Provides a safe environment for patients, self and others.
  • Assesses patient accurately, comprehends finding and communicates patient condition to all team members.

 

Professional/Leadership  Demonstrates proficiency in professional practice.

  • Continuously evaluates the outcomes of patient care and own professional practice.
  • Is preceptor for novice/beginner technicians.
  • Is a member of an interdisciplinary committee/project/task force.
  • Identifies and coordinates resources to impact patient care.
  • Identifies teaching/learning needs and is an active teacher for patients, families, and staff.
  • Role models appearance and behaviors that promote a positive image of the Sleep Center.
  • Assumes *Charge* responsibilities, when necessary.

  • Actively seeks out and uses research findings from various sources to support evidence based protocol.
  • Shares research findings with colleagues in order to improve clinical practice.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of research and/or quality improvement activities.
  • Applies available information to run new study protocols as they are presented.

  • Begins to demonstrate health care informatics competency in order to manage patient care, outcome data and current and emerging health care technology, which include:
    • Basic computer competency, including the effective use of patient care devices, computers, computer software programs such as e-mail and word processing programs, and shared network file space.
    • Information literacy, including the effective use of the Intranet and Internet to find electronic resources for patient care, respiratory practice and evidence-based decision-making;
    • Information management skills, including the effective use of the electronic health record and clinical information systems, the ability to collect clinical data using quality tools and the ability to discuss, evaluate and analyze outcome data presented in charts and tables.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

BLS - Basic Life Support

Respiratory Therapy Licensure for PA based roles.

Polysomnography Technician Licensures for NJ based roles.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education:  High School Diploma / GED and Graduate of a polysomnography, respiratory therapy, EEG program.

 

Required Experience: One (1) year of experience.

 

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education:  Associates Degree

 

Preferred Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Polysomnography Technician Level 1 with documented proficiency in all completed competencies. 

 

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: RPSGT, CRT/RRT with SDS/RPSGT, or REEGT with RPSGT within two (2) years of placement into position.

  • Basic Use of MS Word 2007
    • Creation of meeting minutes, creation of charts and tables
    • Saving and naming of new and established files
  • Basic Use of MS PowerPoint 2007
    • Creation of an education presentation using clip art
  • Basic Use of MS Excel 2007
  • Navigation and basic search functions of the Internet using Internet Explorer
  • Use of Outlook 2007 email, opening of attachments, attaching new files to emails and saving attached files to computer
  • Basic use of computers, printers, monitors, patient care devices, and Fax machines

Information Literacy

  • Use of Internet and Intranet to look up basic electronic resources for practice
    • Ability to find and print Patient Family Education Documents
  • Ability to find and navigate the Sleep Center website and related linked CHOP resource sites
  • Ability to perform a literature search on the Internet and ability to find professional journal and/or research based articles
  • Ability to evaluate Internet sites for reliability

Information Management Literacy

  • Navigation of electronic health information records and ability to review specific patient data in a clinical information system
  • Understanding of policies and procedures around timeliness of care, use of a clinical information system and support of safe practice
  • Ability to collect raw clinical data using quality tools
  • Ability to discuss, evaluate and analyze outcome data presented in charts and tables
  • Discuss the responsibilities of each user of an electronic record related to confidentiality and privacy
  • Coordination of patient care information in a fragmented environment where there is partially online and partially paper references.
