Responsibilities

The Surface Science and Engineering Department focusses on material interfacial phenomena of importance in space and launch vehicles.  The department has three sections: Spacecraft Contamination Effects, Tribology, and Laser-Material interactions.  Each section conducts research and program support using state of the art surface analysis equipment and one-of-a-kind instrumentation developed to understand the specific properties of space materials.  The Laser-Materials interactions area possesses truly unique capabilities, applying laser light to materials to imbue properties and generate novel structures to generate new functionality.

 

Key Functions

  • Perform laboratory and theoretical studies of spacecraft materials, with a focus on tribological materials and fluids
  • Apply laboratory and theoretical tools to issues of importance for spacecraft and launch vehicle systems  
  • Participate in both independent and team activities in performing research and applied studies
  • Develop an understanding of customer needs and concurrently develop capabilities to meet those needs  
  • Support customer programs with technical insight
  • Present results in reports, journal articles, and verbally

 

This position can be filled as a Member of Technical Staff or a Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related scientific field with at least two years of experience
  • Laboratory experience related to materials characterization, particularly viscous fluid properties and composition
  • Experience conducting instrumental analysis of material properties
  • Experience with computational analysis of laboratory data
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry
  • Computer programming applicable to laboratory experiments and data handling
  • Strong theoretical capabilities, such as the use of molecular dynamics, to model fluid behavior
  • Capability of developing physical models of fluid properties and behavior in extreme environments (e.g. space)
  • Experience dealing with tribological systems

 

 

Required for Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related scientific field with at least five years of experience
  • Laboratory experience related to materials characterization, particularly viscous fluid properties and composition
  • Experience conducting instrumental analysis of material properties
  • Experience with computational analysis of laboratory data
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
