Technology Subject Matter Experts (SME)’s use expertise and leadership gained through years of experience to deliver improvement within the manufacturing system.  The duties vary widely between practicing safety leadership, troubleshooting, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, equipment and process studies and audits.  A key component of a Subject Matter Expert’s job is to transfer knowledge and skills to mill personnel to build on-site capability. 

 

Key Accountabilities: 

The Subject Matter Expert position is accountable for delivering results on a wide range of assignments, short and long-term, across our global mill system.  The SME must work well with varied teams and be able to quickly engage employees from all levels of the organization from executive to the shop floor, and influence vendors and contractors.  The SME IV has the ability, communication skills, and presence to influence all levels of the organization from bottom to top.  The SME IV works largely independently, executing change within the area of expertise, and able to influence even very large projects.  The SME IV remains aware of and incorporates changes within the area of expertise into skill set quickly and automatically.  The SME IV is globally astute and generally effective communicating and influencing even in facilities outside the native language.  The SME IV is a generator of ideas and catalyst of change and value creation.

 

Scope: 

The Subject Matter Expert position functions as an internal consultant, and is expected to develop projects and produce improvement in the area of expertise anywhere in the company.  The duties range widely between safety leadership, troubleshooting, optimization, teaching, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, process audits, strategic studies, and mentoring.  Performance measurements include:

  • Ability to contribute to, and deliver improving safety results, with a specific emphasis in the area of expertise
  • Ability to rapidly and accurately diagnose and  resolve operating malfunctions, either onsite and or remotely
  • Reduction in consumption of direct raw materials, energy, and labor.
  • Improvement in production, reliability, availability and quality above historical limits and to world-class levels
  • Ability to interface with and technically develop and mentor others within the area of expertise
  • Ability to drive results and self-manage priorities on multiple simultaneous projects

     

    The SME IV executes well in several of these items, and is very strong in several of them.

     

    Key Competencies:   

    The SME is a self-directed individual, and as such needs a wide array of leadership, functional / technical and organizational skills.  Key examples include:

          Leadership/managerial competencies

  • Interpersonal Savvy – This position interacts with all levels of the company, across the cultures and languages       within IP operations.  The individual must adapt as the situation requires and maintain positive outcomes.
  • Learning on the Fly & Problem Solving – This person is the expert within their area of specialization.  As new or unique situations are encountered, they must self-develop technical skills as the situation dictates.  
  • Presentation & Communication Skills – This person must employ strong verbal and writing skills in the communication/presentation of the compelling and data-based case for change or issue resolution with business context.  Even very complex technical issues are made understandable to a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary audience at the corporate and mill operations level. 
  • The SME IV can organize, lead, and manage teams to solve specific problems within the area of expertise from inception through sustainable solution.  Thought process can extends problem application from the local to the enterprise.
  • The SME IV is able to influence effectively all levels of the organization, executing managerial courage and relating to the floor level to guide solutions to the best result for the enterprise.  Communication skills are good in most situations, with stakeholder management effective.
  • The SME IV is often strategic in thought often applying existing techniques beyond the local solution or situation.
  • The SME IV can independently lead and manage projects of fairly large size that may affect multiple facilities.

     

    Functional / Technical competencies

  • Process – Expert in the individual’s specific area of expertise or combination of areas of expertise.
  • Engineering – Experienced in fundamentals of engineering needed for process or equipment design and knowledgeable of the capital process to at least a moderate level.
  • Operations - Familiar in the development of operating procedures and policy.
  • The SME IV’s capabilities are world-class across most aspects of the subject matter.  Indicators of this level of expertise are:  proven leadership within the subject matter and may have a strong reputation in the industry or in field of work at large.

     

    Minimum qualifications: 

  • The applicant will possess at least 12 years of experience in operations and service within the area of expertise
  • The applicant will be capable of supporting extensive domestic and international travel requirements, and providing process technical support on a business priority basis.

     

    Pressing and Broke/Whitewater Process SME – Job-Specific Requirements and Information

  1. The SME provides process engineering and technical support in pressing and broke/whitewater systems.  This includes ability to understand and optimize sheet solids and runnability through the press section and incorporates all aspects of the process, including press configurations, roll covers, clothing, felt conditioning, and steamboxes.  This also includes ability to utilize data and practical expertise to increase system stability, reduce fiber loss, reduce mill water make-up into stock and whitewater systems, and eliminate the need to use steam for water heading during normal operations and break conditions. It also incorporates process and equipment expertise with savealls, whitewater filtration, level control, pulpers, consistency control, agitation, cleaning, screening, and pump systems.  Expertise in water system closure is also desired.
  2. Serve as technical lead during paper area cost reduction process audit evaluations.  Coordinate efforts of team members in the area.  Collect data and additional information ahead of the PRO to allow teammates to focus on key opportunities.  Lead breakout sessions.
  3. Coach the team members in developing FEL1-ready ideas to reduce cost and improve performance.  Follow-up with the mill team to implement opportunities identified during the Paper PROs.  Work with the mill to implement non-capital items and develop capital recommendations through the FEL process.
  4. Help the mill optimize project performance after implemented.
  5. Mechanical or chemical engineering degree
  6. World-class expertise across most aspects of the following subject matter—fundamentals of pressing, stock prep, whitewater and broke management.  Indicators of this level of expertise are:  proven leadership within the subject matter and may have a strong reputation in the industry or in field of work at large.
  7. Nearly all the SME’s will be collaborative.  Effectively communicating to other team members and leveraging their expertise is a key aspect of the role.  Likewise, effective communication to internal customers and bringing clarity to complex issues is a key challenge.
  8. Directly influences >$5 MM/yr in profitability impact annually from among the following
    • Reduction in consumption of direct raw materials, energy, and labor.
    • Improvement in production, reliability, availability and quality
  9. Rapidly and accurately diagnoses and  resolves operating malfunctions, either onsite and or remotely

  11. The position is physically and personally demanding, requiring travel of 40-60%.  Short-term, high priority projects may require intermittently high work hours.
