Advanced Nurse Practitioner CV Surgery - VAD

The APN in ICU/CV Surgery/VAD Coord:

  • This APN will be serving in Intensivist Role for complex Cardiac patients. 
  • Will be working primarily in ICU with patients from CV Surgery, Transplant, HF and VAD.
  • Will follow all patients on unit in collaboration with CV surgeons, Cardiologists and Pulmonary Critical Care MDs. 
  • This is a fast-paced environment with exposure to latest cardiac technologies and procedures. 
  • Provides a high degree of professional competence and a high level of autonomy in the care of Intensive Care patients, heart failure patients, pre~op and post op heart transplant patients, pre~op and post op ventricular assist device (VAD) patients, pre and post op surgical patients and cardiovascular nursing.
  • The scope of practice impacts patient care through direct patient contact, staff development and/or policy development based on sound standards of care.
  • Advanced practice nursing has evolved into the roles of the Clinical Nurse Specialist:  who integrate education, research, management, leadership, and consultation into clinical roles, and function in collegial relationships with nursing peers and other professionals and individuals.
  • CU/HF/Transplant/VAD Coordinators are highly developed clinical nurse specialists who independently (under a collaborative practice agreement with physicians and surgeons) monitor and manage a case load of ICU and Step-down patients with a variety of advanced cardiac and non~cardiac issues including Heart Failure, Heart Transplant and VAD patients 24~hours a day.
  • They provide clinical, educational, and consultative leadership and support to the patients and their families, the cardiac surgery team, cardiologists, primary care physicians, thoracic and vascular surgeons, nursing staff and ancillary health care associates.



**ICU, CV Surgery, VAD Experience and Acute Care NP is highly preferred**


  • Master's Degree (MSN, MS, etc.) required
  • 5+ years recent experience in clinical specialty, cardiac experience preferred
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current (or eligible) Advance Practice RN license in the State of Illinois
  • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner preferred ( If FNP, will need additional education/certification within 5 years)
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
