The Financial Counselor I assists in the completion and coordination of all activities associated with patient financial processing in the assigned functional area.  Prioritizes, coordinates, and completes patient accounts; ensures all insurance requirements are met; provides information on financial liability to patients; and arranges payment options with the patients.  Screens patients for government and other funding sources.



  1. Prioritizes, coordinates, and completes patient accounts from patient scheduling through patient discharge to ensure that patient financial obligations are met.


  2. Completes patient accounts based on departmental protocols, policies and procedures, and compliance with regulatory agencies, including pre-admission, admission, pre-registration and registration functions.


  3. Calculates and estimates patient charges, as needed, and informs patients and/or guarantor of their financial liability (insurance limits and co-payment responsibilities). 


  4. Records the appropriate information in the information systems and completes daily weekly and monthly reports.


  5. Facilitates communication between Patient Access Services, physicians and other departments regarding insurance and payment issues, as well as other issues that impact patient services and schedules.


  6. Maintains and applies an understanding of governmental, private, facility payment plans and financial assistance programs when initiating and/or processing referrals to these plans or programs.  Assists patients in the completion of financial assistance applications.


Education and/or Experience                                                              

High school diploma or GED required. Minimum one year of experience in hospital admissions, business office and/or physician’s office required.

Some college preparation preferred. General knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT codes and Medical Terminology preferred.


Computer Skills                                                          

Proficient in Microsoft Office software. Experience with Electronic Medical Record systems required.
