The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a motivated and technically skilled studentmajoring in the Biological sciences or pharmacy.  Successful candidates will be able to workindependently, and will also be expected to proactively collaborate withcolleagues.  Primary responsibilities includecontributing to the execution of in vitro experiments including establishing invitro cell-based model systems, development of immunoassays and performing biochemicaland immunohistochemical analysis of tissues to support the identification andvalidation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases. The candidate will be anactive participant in the positive and critical scientific dialogue that supportsour mission of target identification and validation. The student should havestrong interest in neuroscience and learning about CNS drug discovery.

 

The responsibilities ofthe Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Design, execute, interpret and report in vitro experiments.
  • Assist in developing, executing, and troubleshooting new cell assays, protocols and cell imaging methods.
  • Support characterization and validation of compound/biologic agent activity in cell based and in vivo models.
  • Communication of data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
  • Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide their own research.
  • Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and genetics.
Thisis a full- time internship position. Housing subsidy is not available aspart of this program and must be funded 100% by the student. FTP2019 FTPMRL2019Qualifications

Education: 

Required: Candidates must be actively working towards a BS/BA degree in Biological Sciencesor related disciplines such as chemistry, pharmacy or health related fields.


Required Experience andSkills:

  • Candidate must have some experience with basic lab procedures: pipetting, solution preparation, plate assays.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (6) consecutive months beginning in spring 2019.
  • Candidate must have some experience with basic mammalian cell culture, i.e., transfections, primary neurons.
  • Candidates must demonstrate ability to perform accurate data analysis.
  • Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of lab reports and presentations. Strong attention to detail.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Candidates should have neuroscience class work.
  • Candidates should have experience with rodent animal handling/in vivo models a plus.
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate interest in conducting experiments to determine efficacy of test compounds, establish dose-response and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships, investigatebiomarker responses and target engagement or modulation.
