Principal Business Architect


Job Location: Cary, NC 

 

Role Value Proposition:

The principal business architect is accountable for facilitating and managing the delivery of business architecture services and related deliverables against globally aligned Claims, New Business Underwriting (NBUW), and Billing & Remittance capabilities and supporting IT solutions.  As a Principal Business Architect, you will partner with our business leaders to assess the overall health of capabilities, develop domain level business strategies, and then create a multi-year roadmap and conceptual architectures to enable those strategies and improve the capabilities. The Principal Business Architect plays an important role by bringing together information in ways that provide new insights and perspectives on operational effectiveness as well as future business.

 

These insights include:

  • Partnering with senior business leaders to determine the feasibility of new ideas
  • Assessing emerging opportunities
  • Translate strategy and business needs into complete programs and architectures
  • Participate in the development of architecture current and target state capability models
  • Work with technology delivery organizations and other IT partners to guide ideas into funded and launched initiative

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Clarify the organization’s strategic intent for claims, new business/underwriting, and billing/remittance, by developing business domain level strategies and the corresponding multi-year capability roadmaps
  • Decompose business strategies into the capabilities required to effectively execute, govern and manage them
  • Facilitate discussion with business leaders to collectively assess capability health and articulate capability gaps/business challenges
  • Ensure strategic intent and impacts on supporting capabilities and systems are mutually understood by the business and technology organizations
  • Facilitate capability prioritization activities through examination of opportunity costs, benefits, duration and other prerequisites
  • Participate in the identification and evaluation of new business opportunities and then translate them into strategic initiatives, roadmaps and conceptual architectures
  • Present cohesive models, capability blueprints, and roadmaps to stakeholders in order to secure consensus on proposed capabilities and technology initiatives
  • Create high-level system and roadmap views that enable stakeholders to focus their attention on the most-important areas, and enable identification of impacted capabilities, functions, and systems
  • Work across organizational silos to identify opportunities for collaboration, reuse, and integration as well as to identify and resolve dependencies and impacts
  • Translate business goals for multiple lines of business, and identify common, shared business solutions

 

Essential Business and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in related field strongly preferred (ComSci, MIS, CIS)
  • 5+ years relevant experience in the capacity of business architecture working on large programs
  • The ability to create, update and apply architectural principles to business solutions  - visualizing and creating high-level models that can be used in future state analysis to extend and mature the business architecture
  • Ability to assimilate and correlate disconnected documentation and drawings, and articulate their collective relevance to the organization and to high-priority business issues
  • Experience using model-based representations that can be adjusted as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business
  • Ability to act as liaison conveying information needs of the business to IT and data constraints to the business; applies equal conveyance regarding business strategy and IT strategy, business processes and work flow automation, business initiatives and IT initiatives, and benefit realization and service delivery

Preferred:

  • Understanding and practice of applying an enterprise architecture framework; TOGAF or similar framework
  • Experience designing, modeling and optimizing business processes (BPMN format preferred)
  • Proven delivery skills including the ability to scope/size a project, provide subject matter direction and guidance to teams, manage communications with the project sponsors, and manage the delivery of a business architecture work stream
