Tax Officer - Hamilton

The position is responsible for assisting the Manager, Taxation with the effective & profitable delivery of Taxation Services. This includes overseeing the day-to-day work of Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators and the Tax Administrative Clerk, including allocating and monitoring their work load and reviewing their work for completeness and accuracy. The incumbent also prepares tax returns of a highly complex nature. This all takes place in a work environment that is highly regulated, technically complex, subject to daily tax filing deadlines and continually changing federal and provincial tax legislation.


Key Accountabilities:

1. Assist the Manager in the day-to-day operation of the Taxation Centre by:

• Allocating and monitoring the work of Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators, Tax Admin Clerk and seasonal staff;

• Monitoring day-to-day tax filing deadlines;

• Reviewing the work of Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators and seasonal staff for completeness and accuracy;

• Providing on-going guidance, motivation and tax technical coaching to Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators and Tax Administrative Clerk;

• Providing input for the annual performance assessment of Associate Tax Officers and Tax Administrators and Tax Administrative Clerk.


2. Perform key tax preparation functions by:

• Preparing the most complex T1 Personal, T1 Terminal, T3 estate and trust, and T2 corporate tax returns;

• Performing any necessary bookkeeping activities and preparing financial statements to support our tax filings;

• Calculating, withholding and remitting non-resident tax, payroll source deductions and personal and corporate tax instalments on a national basis and preparing the associated tax returns and summaries;

• Preparing the T3 returns for Scotiabank RSP, RIF and TFSA registered products.


3. Provide tax solutions and strategies to relationship managers, advisors and their clients by:

• Proactively recognizing tax issues as they affect the client’s situations and ensuring that relationship managers and advisors are made aware and, in some cases, communicating the issues directly to clients;

• Performing analysis, undertaking research, and assessing tax situations and providing

recommendations around specific courses of action in complex situations.


4. Contribute to the effective functioning of the Taxation Service team by:

• Participating actively in team learning and development activities and team performance achievements

• Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line and corporate function contacts

• Maintaining a high level of client service

• Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication

• Actively participating and contributing to touch bases and team meetings

• Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches

• Actively share knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members

• Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan

• Assist with special projects as they arise from time-to-time.




• Experience includes previous employment within a tax unit servicing individuals, trusts, and corporations

• Post-secondary degree or diploma

• Has completed the STEP or CSI Taxation Courses and keeps up-to-date with respect to legislative changes, particularly the frequent changes to the taxation of individuals, estates, trusts, corporations, and registered charities

• Excellent computer skills are required, particularly in the use of tax preparation programs and MS Office, Salesforce and the Broadridge Trust System



• Working towards an accounting designation (CPA)


Functional Competencies:

• Strong analytical skills

• Ability to deal with complex issues using strong judgment and problem solving skills to meet very tight deadlines as well as manage several projects at a time

• Communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as interpersonal skills must be very strong

• Strong knowledge of the Federal and Provincial income tax rules with a strong ability to interpret the legislation as it relates to estates and trusts, individuals, and corporations, including current Canada Revenue Agency policies and estate planning concepts

• Strong knowledge of the operations of trusts and applicable laws including Excise, CPP, EI and Family Law

• Ability to analyze and interpret trust & legal documents to identify tax issues

• Understanding of the regulatory environment for trust companies
