Fabricator Technician I&II

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The purpose of this position is:

To machine or weld-fabricate precision parts and tools from blueprints and/or sketches for production, engineering, and RD& E.  Provide feedback to the Maintenance and Engineering to change design specifications improving the efficiency and or productivity of the parts being produced.

This description is intended to provide general duties and responsibilities and not meant to be an exhaustive inventory of the role. You may be assigned and expected to perform duties not  otherwise contained in this description.

  • Selection and inspection of weld and fabrication materials, clean and maintain equipment. May perform routine and preventative maintenance on air compressors and automated storage systems
  • Able to operate prescribed equipment in accordance with highly qualified and precision machining techniques
  • Performs close tolerance quality work in highly difficult and diversified conditions.
  • Be able to understand complicated dimensional relationships and unusual contours from detailed specifications and instructions
  • Be able to work from complex, sectionalized and part drawings and specifications. 
  • Determine figure angles and dimensions required for machining procedures not supplied with technical data.
  • Determine proper dimensions from models.
  • Understand heat treating principles and procedures for the purpose of attaining required hardness of tools and dies. 
  • Understand the differences between finishes and the proper equipment necessary to achieve surface finishes from rough cut to super finishes.

Working Conditions:

Good working conditions. Heavy lifting in rare instances typically assisted. Majority of time light lifting is involved. Some exposure to elements of dirt, dust, fumes, heat, and noise, but none to the extent of being disagreeable


Equivalent to an accredited apprenticeship program in trade, craft, or occupation.


  • Proficiency in drafting and design from a technical program or equivalent on the job training. 
  • Three years of experience to have a thorough understanding of welding and fabricating techniques and materials. 
  • Must be proficient in the use of lathes, milling machines, drill press, band and cutoff saws, metal grinders, pipe fitting, steel rigging, metal shear and brake, welding equipment, micrometers, dial and digital calipers, and small hand and power tools.
