    About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and sub specialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a fifty-three-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi). http://www.vacareers.va.gov/
    Of the nine active CBOCs in the catchment area, three are VA staffed and 6 are contracted. The VA Memphis South CBOC, located 8 miles from the Memphis VA Medical Center, provided primary and mental health care to 7,174 Veterans. The VA Memphis North CBOC, located 80 miles from the medical center, saw 6,390 patients. The VAMC Memphis also has contract CBOCs located in Smithville and Byhalia, MS; Jonesboro and Helena, AR; Savannah and Dyersburg, TN, which provide primary and mental health care to Veterans. As a result, the Memphis VA Medical Center CBOCs improve access and reduce the travel distance for approximately 33,000 Veterans outlying counties.
    The VAMC in Memphis is part of the VA Mid-South Healthcare Network, VISN 9, which includes facilities in Lexington and Louisville, KY; Nashville and Mountain Home, TN.

    Responsibilities

    This position is located in the Environmental Management Service at the Memphis VAMC, Memphis, TN. The incumbent will perform specialized tasks in completing sanitation duties in critical patient care areas. Areas include, but not limited to Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Med/Surg. Unit. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
    * Performs independently a range of housekeeping cleaning duties. Such as cleaning patients' rooms using sanitizing chemicals that will not compromise patients' health to disinfect surfaces.
    * Use proper cleaning solutions and/or chemicals to successfully remove stains from a variety of surfaces (floors, carpet, tile, walls, etc.)
    * Clean and sanitize restrooms: urinals, commodes, sinks, mirrors, and etc. - Using ladders and/or scaffolds to wash ceiling fixtures; washing or replacing venetian blinds or room partitions.
    * Pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying or moving cleaning equipment around for several hours or more at a time.
    * Operate powered equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines and/or industrial vacuums.
    * Standing/walking for several hours or more while cleaning and moving furniture.
    * Follow sanitation and infection control procedures to prevent the spread of bacteria.
    * Adhere to safety policies and procedures when performing manual work.

    Work schedule: Varies shifts: (7:30 am-4:00 pm; noon-8:00 pm; 4:00 pm-midnight; midnight-8:00 am) (Work Weekends and Holidays may be applicable)

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also, performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
    WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
    Housekeeping Aid Functioning Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs. and over); heavy carrying (45 lbs. and over); straight pulling (up to 1 hour); pushing (1-2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 3 hours); standing (up to 3 hours); repeated bending (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; hearing (aid permitted).

    Participation in seasonal influenza program may be required.
