The Merck Neuroscience team is seeking a motivatedand technically skilled student majoring in the biological sciences orpharmacy.  The student should have strong interest in neuroscience andlearning about CNS drug discovery.  Successful candidates will be able towork independently, and will be expected to proactively collaborate withcolleagues.  Primary responsibilities include contributing to theexecution of in vitro experiments including establishing in vitro cell-basedmodel systems, development of immunoassays and performing biochemical andimmunohistochemical analysis of tissues to support the identification andvalidation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases. The candidate will be anactive participant in the positive and critical scientific dialogue thatsupports our mission of target identification and validation.


The responsibilities of theEarly Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Design, execute, interpret and report in vitro experiments.
  • Assist in developing, executing, and troubleshooting new cell assays, protocols and imaging methods.
  • Support characterization and validation of antibody activity in cell based and in vivo models.
  • Communication of data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
  • Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide their research.
  • Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology and genetics.
Thisis a full- time internship position. Housing subsidy is not available aspart of this program and must be funded 100% by the student.




Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled ina BS/BA degree program in the biological sciences or related disciplines suchas chemistry, pharmacy, or health related fields.

Required Experience andSkills:

  • Candidates must have completed at least (2) years toward degree program by June of 2019.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (6) months beginning in mid- 2019.
  • Candidates must have strong desire to develop knowledge of neuroscience drug discovery
  • Candidates must have some experience with basic lab procedures: pipetting, solution preparation, plate assays.
  • Candidates must demonstrate interest in conducting experiments to determine efficacy of test compounds, establish dose-response and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships, investigate biomarker responses and target engagement or modulation in vivo.
  • Candidates must have some experience with basic mammalian cell culture, i.e., transfections, primary neurons.
  • Candidatesmust have demonstrated ability to perform accurate data analysis.
Preferred Experienceand Skills:
  • Candidates should have previous neuroscience class work.
  • Candidates should have experience with rodent behavior, animal handling, dosing procedures
  • Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of lab reports and presentations.
  • Candidatesshould have strong attention to detail.
