Space Systems Development Engineer

The Applied Space Systems Group develops environmental monitoring electro-optical (EO) infrared (IR) and radiofrequency (RF) sensor systems for detecting and tracking natural and man-made phenomena. The Group’s activities include the extraction of target and feature information from ground-level, airborne and space-borne imagery; system support of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) environmental satellites in performance analysis and improvement of existing sensors and products; architecture definition and sensor development support for the next-generation NOAA and NASA satellite systems, and environmental monitoring and chemical detection sensor and systems development. Work includes EO/IR and RF sensor design, system and architecture analysis, signal processing, data analysis, and algorithm development and refinement.

 

We are seeking a candidate with a working knowledge of end to end satellite communication systems, covering frequency ranges from baseband to X-band or higher, to evaluate performance, support testing, and support system trade studies. Candidate must have a detailed knowledge of RF channel and RF modulation formats, knowledge of error-correcting coding, and an ability to assess error performance for various formats. Candidate should have experience with all aspects of digital and analog communication systems, including error free coding. Experience with design and construction of microwave and RF communications system hardware and software defined radios would be beneficial. A working knowledge of or experience with hardware design and test is needed. Candidate should be able to assess link budgets and perform link analysis with respect to environmental factors including weather and ionospheric effects. Familiarity with existing communications systems and the NTIA frequency authorization is also beneficial. Experience with data processing packages (such as Matlab) and Microsoft products is needed. Experience with orbit simulation as in STK would be beneficial.

 

Requirements: M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Astrophysics, Astronomy, Aerospace Engineering or related areas with a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience is needed.
