    Responsibilities

    The food service worker sets up and replenishes cafeteria line, steam table, refrigerator and beverage units with hot and cold food items. Items include meats, vegetables, salads, desserts, bread, butter, and beverages. Serves food cafeteria style and places a portion of food on customers' plates. Apportions food items for tray line. Loads trays on food delivery carts. Delivers and retrieves meal trays; delivers nourishment to patients; works in the dish room/scullery; performs routine cleaning tasks; cleans and sets up dining room tables for service. Breaks down and cleans assigned area on tray line. Returns food to designated area in the kitchen.
    Work Schedule: To be determined by supervisor. Weekends and holidays are required.

    EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of a Food Service Worker. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.     SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Physical Requirements: Required to perform work requiring light to heavy effort. Subject to continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. Walking is usually indoors but occasionally outdoors in inclement weather. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 lbs. (e.g., heavy trays). Scours and scrubs large cooking utensils. Pushes heavy carts weighing up to 500 lbs.

    Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dish washing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezer units. Must sort through the remains of patient meal service handling garbage and dirty dishes. Subject to multiple odors: cooking, grease, garbage and chemicals. May be subjected to hostility, anger and inappropriate behavior of patients and receive undeserved criticism from patients or staff outside Nutrition and Food Services yet must display a calm and courteous attitude.

    Works on patient wards when delivering meal trays and nourishments or retrieving meal trays. Required to wear proper hair covering (hairnet or hat dependent on length of hair, beard-guard) and clean uniform. Maintains personal hygiene. Wears clean gloves when handling food for service to maximize sanitation of food. Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) for certain tasks following standard procedures.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.

    The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. To be qualified you must submit appropriate documentation (a copy of the agency notice, your most recent performance rating, and your most recent SF-50 noting current position, grade level, and duty location) and be found well-qualified (have a final rating of 85 or more) for this vacancy.
