OPERATING ROOM ASSISTANT - HOI OPERATING ROOM

The Operating Room Assistant’s primary functions include patient transport, general cleaning, equipment cleaning, gathering equipment, specimen transport, room turnover, performing shave preps as needed in pre-op area, and assisting OR team with patient care (positioning and prepping) under direction of RN/MD. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports Hoag Hospital’s, Perioperative Service’s and Unit’s mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

  • Primary functions include patient transport, general cleaning, equipment cleaning, gathering equipment, specimen transport, room turnover, performing shave preps as needed in pre-op area, and assisting OR team with patient care (positioning and prepping) under direction of RN/ MD.
  • Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct.
  • Supports Hoag Hospital’s, Perioperative Service’s and Unit’s mission.
  • Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.
  • Room turnover goal is accomplished in 25 minutes or less.
  • Have knowledge of all equipment used at HOI, and is qualified to troubleshoot equipment that is not working properly.
  • Expertly assists with proper patient positioning under the direction of the other surgical team members.
  • Takes stat specimens to the laboratory immediately.
  • Understands the rationale for OR cleaning practices, and consistently demonstrates proper guidelines for room cleaning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

Education, Training and Experience

 

Required:

  • A high school diploma is required.
  • BLS certification.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, organizational ability to position patients with minimal instruction.

Preferred:

  • 1 year of Patient care experience in hospital setting. Skills and knowledge of equipment related to the surgical/ procedural environment.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Critical thinking, ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the patient’s behalf.
  • Work well 1:1 and in a team to obtain better than expected outcomes.
  • Possesses a knowledge of the business of healthcare along the continuum of care, clinical decision support data analysis/synthesis, and quality improvement, regulatory and legislative issues.
  • Self-directed individual with ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines, excellent attention to detail, and maintain a high level of work quality.
  • Proven ability to interface with all customer levels (physicians, Organizational staff, insurance companies, patients and family members).
  • Decisive and capable of exercising good judgment under pressure.

Preferred:

  • Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus healthcare database systems.
