Paramedic/Emergency Department Full Time 7A-7P (University) Job

Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Paramedic performs a variety of duties to assist the nursing staff and physicians in rendering patient care in the Emergency Department.  Provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes observation, assessment, and specified treatments and procedures.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

Current training in Advanced Life Support (PALS and ACLS); OR must be obtained within 6 months of hire

Must satisfactorily complete the ED Paramedic competency modules (within 90 days of hire) to include:

Skills validation relevant to the care of ED patients in designated areas

MLH Pharmacology review modules and medication test 

Hospital and Emergency Department policies and procedures orientation

The ideal experience would include 3 years in an EMS system with moderate to high volume.  Equivalent work related experience in a hospital or in the military may be considered.

 

  • Current licensure as a Paramedic in the state where work is performed.

 

  • Effective June 1, 2018: New Hires and Transfers are required to have current BLS Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the EMS profession.
  • Requires knowledge of both routine and special procedures as assigned by RN or physician.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with members of the healthcare team, community, patients and families.  Must be able to provide comfort, support, encouragement, and effective instructions in interactions with patients and their families.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology and the side effects of medications administered.
  • Requires familiarity with equipment and supplies related to field of practice.
  • Ability to perform computerized data entry and navigate in a windows environment.
  • A good basic understanding of the concepts of aseptic and sterile techniques to prevent spread of infection to patients, self and others.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge to observe and report changes in patient condition. 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, performs specified patient care in the Emergency Department.
  • Documents care delivered in the patient’s medical record in accordance with policy and procedure for the emergency department..
  • Provides support in the preparation, care, maintenance, and availability of emergency department supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: moderate to heavy work - exerting up to 250 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
