The Piping Engineer will be part of an engineering team providing engineering services to large and small projects. The Piping Engineer is broadly responsible for establishing system requirements, performing functional analyses, defining design criteria, preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports. In addition, the Piping Engineer is required to develop, or provide input into, 3D models and 2D drawings. The Piping Engineer reports to the Lead Mechanical and Piping Engineer on a large project and to the Project Manager or the Engineering Manager on a small project. The Piping Engineer may supervise junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists on a project. The Piping Engineer is expected to mentor junior engineers as part of their career development programs.

 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Assist in defining project scope
  • Assist the Engineering Manager/Lead Engineer with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
  • Prepare design calculations and documentation
  • Requisition piping components, provide technical evaluation and review of supplier data
  • Ensure design drawing content is accurate and correctly portrays design intent
  • Prepare reports and deliverables as required including progress report studies and material takeoffs
  • Prepare piping specifications including piping details and field changes 
  • Design and provide input to P&IDs
  • Promote piping systems to achieve best project outcomes
  • Coordinate with other disciplines as the design evolves
  • Participate in HAZOP reviews
  • Participate in resolution of piping issues during project lifecycle, including planning phase, design, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning
  • Carry out assigned tasks within budget and schedule
  • Stamp documents and drawings as required and if appropriately registered
  • Manage small capital and maintenance projects
  • Assist in preparing proposals
  • Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists
  • Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of piping engineering work
  • Adhere to and promote the Hatch corporate safety culture

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential 

  • BSc/BEng in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • Registration as a professional engineer. Alternatively, registration as a candidate professional engineer actively working towards professional registration
  • Minimum five years engineering experience
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision
  • Ability to achieve quality and schedule objectives
  • Ability to plan and organize work
  • Good understanding of systems and workflows as they relate to the piping discipline
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the piping engineering discipline
  • Good technical knowledge of piping engineering including specifications, calculations, P&ID development, line sizing, material selection, isolation requirements, valve selection and requisitioning of piping components
  • Familiarity with the requirements and application of pipe stress analysis
  • Good knowledge of 3D data centric design systems
  • Experience in the technical review of vendor drawings and supplier data
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate piping activities between disciplines
  • Safety awareness

 

 Preferred  

  • Sound knowledge of Hatch 3D data centric design systems
  • Sound knowledge of Hatch engineering management systems
  • Ability to delegate tasks and effectively supervise others
  • Site experience in a technical role
