Responsibilities

The Lidar and Sensor Calibration Section at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated engineer or scientist to support experimental programs in sensor illumination and laser remote sensing.  As a member of the Photonics Technology Department, successful applicants will participate in the design, construction, and operation of laboratory and field experiments designed to advance applications of laser technology in support of space systems.  Duties will include the construction and alignment of laboratory and field instruments, experimnetal set-up and execution, data analysis and preparation of reports.  The diverse portfolio of experiments will provide motivated applicants considerable opportunity for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.

 

Key Functions

  • Collaborates with scientists on laboratory testing
  • Suggests appropriate materials, test equipment and techniques
  • Refines test designs as needed
  • Writes test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities
  • Maintains laboratory equipment
  • Builds, repairs, and ensures the calibration of the equipment
  • Sets up instrumentation for tests
  • Ensures that all safety rules and regulations are being followed 
  • Attends necessary laboratory safety training
  • Participates as needed in offsite field campaigns

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, optics, or a closely related field; or an associate’s degree with 2 years work experience in the technical area
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Experience in CAD software such as Solidworks and machining
  • Experience in electronics fabrication, instrument control, or programming (C++ or LabView)
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems and prioritize tasks and projects
  • Practical experience with lasers and optical systems
  • Experience operating and maintaining sensitive electronics equipment
  • Willingness to travel and work in a diverse set of work environments

  • Laboratory environment with possible exposure to hazardous materials.
