    This position is located in Prince William Forest, in the Maintenance Division.
    The primary purpose of this position is to perform laboring duties that require significant manual skill, prior work experience or training, and very heavy physical effort.

    Responsibilities

    • Operates large, complex riding lawn mowers that have multiple or independently controlled cutting decks, and/or specially designed mowers that operate on slopes; lawn and garden tractors with various specialty attachments such as gardening attachments, trenchers, snow plowing or removal equipment, etc.
    • Carries out special laboring assignment(s) which require knowledge of several step, phases, or detailed procedures and a practical knowledge of project requirements and objectives.
    • Loads and unloads supplies and material from trucks, trailers, dollies, ect.
    • Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally breaks up pavement, soil, or concrete; mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads.
    • Operates vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions, and performs minor operator maintenance on light duty motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work..
    • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
    • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
    • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of very heavy physical effort in operating large, riding mowers. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside and is frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. The work performed requires the employee to frequently use safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries.

    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
