    Responsibilities

    The Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA) is seeking a Cooperative Education Student to work on a variety of projects to support and enhance the effectiveness of service provided by the OLA. Specific duties and projects for this position will include:
  • Providing staff support to OLA attorneys and paralegal specialist;
  • Assisting in the entry of archival material into the OLA legislative library database and files;
  • Receiving, screening, and referring callers and visitors to appropriate staff members;
  • Conducting legal and legislative research;
  • Attending congressional hearings and briefing OLA attorneys;
  • Assisting a Judicial Conference Committee;
  • Opening, reviewing, logging, copying and distributing incoming mail; and
  • Formatting, printing, copying and assembling office publications.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • All new AO employees will be required to complete a FBI fingerprint-based national criminal database and records check.
  • A background security investigation is required for all selectees. Appointment will be subject to a successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements may be grounds for appropriate personnel action. A background security reinvestigation or supplemental investigation may be required at a later time.
  • All new AO employees must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of pay before appointment.
  • You will be required to serve a trial period if selected for a first-time appointment to the Federal government, transferring from another Federal agency, or serving as a first-time supervisor. Failure to successfully complete the trial period may result in termination of employment.
  • If appointed to a temporary position, management may have the discretion of converting the position to permanent depending upon funding and staffing allocation.


  • Qualifications
    Basic Qualification Requirements: Qualifications for AO Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) positions are closely related to the criteria established for executive branch positions by the Office of Personnel Management. Co-op positions are classified and paid under a broad-banded system. Salary is set commensurate with educational background and experience. Demonstrated relevant work experience will be credited.
    • Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student in either an undergraduate or graduate level program.
    • Applicants must have completed at least one year of undergraduate education beyond high school.
    • Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
    • Applicants must be available to work year round in Washington, DC, and be able to stay for at least one year.
    Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the BASIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS, applicants must also:
    • Have the ability to work well in a team environment.
    • Have very strong communication and reading skills and be detailed oriented.
    • Have a working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, or WordPerfect.
    • Have excellent writing, reading and interpersonal skills, and be able to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
    • Applicants should have an interest in political science, law, or the Judiciary


    Education
    School Affiliation: All students in the Co-op program must be enrolled in an accredited school, and must be working toward a degree, diploma, certificate, etc. on a full or part-time basis. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States. Transcripts are required to apply for this position.
