Overview

The Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) is the registered nurse in charge of a ward/unit or group of wards/units or a service within SESLHD. The NUM leads, directs and coordinates patient or client care; ensures nursing practice is safe and efficient, and maintains standards of care through continual quality improvement initiatives. The NUM leads the nursing and multidisciplinary care team at the ward or unit level and monitors the business and management functions of the ward or unit.

The NUM2 role involves responsibilities in relation to patient services, ward/unit management and staff management that exceed those of a Nursing Unit Manager Level 1. The position requires broad nursing experience, professional integrity, ethical conduct, accountability, advocacy, collaboration, and commitment to advancing the profession of nursing and care provision.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, direct and coordinate patient or client care within the ward/unit.
  • Ensure safe and efficient nursing practice and drive continual quality improvement initiatives.
  • Lead and coordinate the nursing and multidisciplinary care team at the unit level.
  • Monitor and manage the business and management processes of the ward/unit.
  • Demonstrate capability through attitude, skills, behavior and attributes including collaboration and effective teamwork.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA).
  • Relevant management tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience, or a combination of study and work experience with demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  • Knowledge and experience in the management and delivery of health care services.
  • Proven ability in innovative clinical service delivery, harm minimisation and practice development.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills to engage, enable and manage teams.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture and articulate and achieve a vision for nursing services.
  • Recent experience as a Nurse Unit Manager.
