Overview

Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) on the 6th Floor at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne (SVPHM), Fitzroy Campus. This is a part-time maternity leave cover for the 6th floor, a 45 bed acute surgical ward specialising in Orthopaedic, Plastics, Vascular & Thoracic Surgery. The role involves planning and implementing nursing care to a high standard within an inclusive, improvement‑oriented team.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) to provide direction, support and advice to nursing & support personnel on a shift‑by‑shift basis
  • Assist the NUM and assume NUM responsibilities in their absence; contribute to organisational development as directed
  • Foster effective working relationships with staff, patients and Visiting Medical Practitioners (VMPs)
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Co‑ordinator and NUM to manage patient workload and staffing requirements on a shift‑by‑shift basis
  • Support achievement of Unit and Organisational KPIs, Mission, Vision & Values
  • Ensure representation at meetings and contribute to portfolios, committees and improvement activities
  • Coordinate and implement interventions identified in the plan of care/clinical path; maintain continuity of care
  • Provide leadership in the absence of the NUM and maintain unit policies and procedures
  • Assist with budgeting, rostering, and cost awareness within the unit
  • Support quality and safety initiatives and risk management activities
  • Promote person‑centred care and engage with patients to support informed decision making

Responsibilities in Safety, Quality & HR

  • Health and Safety: protect self and others; complete annual Fire & Emergency Training; address Workplace Bullying and Harassment as required
  • Quality & Safety: operate within scope of practice; participate in risk management, patient safety, and quality improvement; align with NSQHS standards and organisational policies
  • Human Resources: assist NUM with recruitment, rosters, performance feedback, and staff development; supervise and orient new staff; monitor and manage leave and attendance
  • Professional Development: maintain personal competencies, support team development, and participate in professional development activities
  • Safety leadership: promote area safety, incident reporting and root cause analysis, and collaborate with safety teams

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • Postgraduate qualifications in the relevant clinical specialty or working towards; National Criminal History Check; Working with Children Check
  • Working knowledge of applicable regulations and infection control standards; ability to contribute to quality improvement
  • Computer literacy with MS Office

Immunisations

SVHA immunisation policy applies; mandatory immunisations/vaccinations may be required (e.g., COVID‑19 and influenza) depending on the role.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent desk/keyboard tasks; occasional lifting up to 5 kg; various manual handling tasks; PPE usage (gloves, gown, eye protection)
