Job Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Administrative Director and in conjunction with the Pathologist in Chief, this position is responsible for and has authority for managing (planning, organizing, staffing, influencing and controlling) all components of the Laboratory.

Job Responsibilities

1.

Manage Lab

 

 

  • Recruit, interview and mentor entry-level leadership staff.
  • Cross train employees in multiple workstations – Scheduling
  • Oversee performance of laboratory technical supervisors.
  • Assist staff with development of customer service orientation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

 

 

2.

Assure full compliance with licensing and accreditation requirements.

 

 

  • Participates and Passes all proficiency testing program.
  • Department meets or exceeds federal, state and CAP guideline
  • Update Standard Operating Procedures to reflect current standards.
  • Develop and perform internal and interdepartmental audits.
  • Participate in the interpretation and response to audit outcomes.

Develops, tests, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting departmental and institutional goals.

 

 

  • Annually prepares written measurable goals for the department.
  • Participates in a work group to improve departmental or cross-functional processes.
  • Uses innovative and/or non-traditional approaches to implement changes, which enhance department/institution’s ability to meet goals.

 

4.

Integrates trends in healthcare and own profession to forecast future departmental and institutional needs for program development, space, and financial resources.

 

 

  • Initiates at least one realistic tactical/strategic planning recommendation annually based on trend data and/or benchmarking.

Share expertise with other organizations.

 

 

  • Participate on technical committees.
  • Perform external assessments.
  • Participate in inter-organizational discussions related to the the Laboratory’s policies and practices.
  • Performs other related recruitment, marketing and research duties as needed.

 

6.

Financial and statistical collection and management.

 

  • Oversee collection and calculation of departmental statistics including but not limited to overtime and workload data.
  • Maintain operating budget within established guidelines.
  • Track and trend revenue accounting for variations from projected values.
  • Ensure proper performance of billing procedures by staff.
  • Oversee departmental purchase of equipment and supplies.

 

7.

  • Demonstrate professional relationships with all memberships with all members of the department, including physicians, management team and department faculty.
  • Demonstrate ability to tactfully manage and resolve difficult situations.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying and performing technical and administrative tasks, assigned and unassigned.
  • Works efficiently and adapts well to change.
  • Develops professionally through continuing education.
  • Keeps abreast of technical and administrative trends through professional affiliations.
  • Be prepared to accept and champion changes.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

ASCP - Am Soc Clinical Pathology

Required Education and Experience

  • BS degree in Medical Technology or other science or health care related field
  • A minimum of 10 years clinical laboratory experience with at least 5 years at a supervisory level.
  • Supervisory experience in Core Laboratory Management (multiple disciplines) is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience must include technical procedure writing, performance appraisals, performance improvement planning, disciplinary actions and quality assurance projects.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

 M.T. (ASCP) or NCA required

  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Ability to utilize multiple computer platforms and programs.
  • Ability to capture and analyze data.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be familiar with all licensing, accreditation and regulatory requirements.
