Health and Safety Specialist

The Health & Safety Specialist leads the design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive contributor safety program to increase safety awareness, reduce accidents, injuries and workers compensation cost. This position is also responsible for preforming safety risk assessments for each department within the facility, identify plans of corrective action and collaborate with leadership on solutions.

 

Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Leads program development, implementation of employee safety prevention program
  • Executes preventative and predictive safety audits.
  • Minimizes contributor illnesses, injuries and related costs.
  • Recommends and promotes safe and healthy working conditions.
  • Assesses, inspects and recommends a course of action for the elimination of safety / health risks with in the workplace.
  • Ensures facilities compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
  • Effectively communicates with department peers to minimize problems associated with health / safety activities.
  • Provides new-contributor health and safety orientations, and assists in developing materials for these presentations.
  • Assists in OSHA Audits, including compiling OSHA Reports and Data Entry, including the OSHA 300A report.
  • Conducts ergonomic assessments
  • Works with physical readiness provider to insure all tests are accurate and up to date based on current business.
  • Participates as a member of the emergency response team.
  • Maintains and updates emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Participates in and provide direction to the safety committee
  • First level of contact and reporting in the event of a safety / health incident.
  • Provides technical expertise, safety training and coaching to all levels of facility leadership.
  • Data collection, tracking and reporting of health and safety metrics
  • Participates in department meetings and projects as assigned including the monthly Workers Comp Review conference call.
  • Reviews all “Reportable Incidents” and conduct an investigation to determine root cause.
  • Maintains neat, clean and well-organized work area
  • Timely and regular attendance
  • Assists in the completion of Inspection and maintenance of monthly fire extinguisher inspections and eyewash stations.
  • Supports all Departments and Operations without delay

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, occupational health or related scientific or technical field preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in organizational safety and employee health programs
  • Certification in safety, hazard management, ergonomics and industrial hygiene preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of root cause analysis
  • Advanced computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Familiarity with Federal, State and local safety and employee health standards and regulations
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Maintenance experience and/or facility management preferred

     

    Physical Requirements:

    Capability to lift 50 pounds. Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, swivel, carry items from one building to another, and speak and actively listen.  Noise level is usually moderate.
