Systems Administrator

The Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Systems group works with sponsors within the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (including the Federal Emergency Management Agency) to develop new sensors, signal processing techniques, network and communication systems, situational awareness systems, and collaborative decision support architectures to bolster domestic and international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.  Core areas of investigation in this space include Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mobile development (particularly Android), and serious games.


The, System Administrator II, will provide systems & application administration, enterprise infrastructure engineering, cyber security operations and program support to the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Systems Group. They will support the research group's end user devices, Linux systems, on-premise/cloud enterprise infrastructure and 24/7 operational support of mission critical web application servers. They will assist with Ansible configuration management and security vulnerability remediation.


Position requires technical depth in Operating Systems (OS) (Linux Windows, Mac), hardware, networks, and IT security best practices as well as a high degree of troubleshooting skills to quickly diagnose and resolve issues.


The successful candidate will have a team and staff focused approach to IT administration, support and future development.  Proactive planning and implementation for day-to-day IT needs as well as for program support is required.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other related scientific or technical discipline.
  • 5+ years IT and Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS) Administration - Experience and knowledge required to manage, monitor, troubleshoot and maintain/design highly available solutions in an enterprise Linux environment.
  • Working knowledge of Virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V, etc.). AWS
  • NetApp
  • Cisco Networking & Firewall
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, WINS and LDAP, as well as working knowledge with open source platforms and tools such as Apache, Tomcat, Samba, MySQL, etc.
  • IT Security - vulnerability remediation, network design, logging. Develop and implementation of Data Security Plans for unique and system and operating requirements outside established security policy.
  • Windows System Administration; active directory, system builds.p
  • Ability to work analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Off-hour support; planned/unplanned off hours work may be required.



  • Security+ or greater certification
  • RHCE Certification and/or RHCSA Certification


Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment; be detail oriented, able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, execute project and administrative tasks with a high degree of quality and work well with staff and management. Strong problem solving skills will be required to come up with innovative solutions to challenging problems.
