Occasional travel to other sites to meet the needs of the clinic may be required.

Position Summary

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures locks and unlocks doors, assists in the Emergency Department, remains alert for fire and safety hazards, controls access into the facility, responds to all emergency codes and helps enforce hospital policies.  Performs similar duties to provide a safe and secure hospital environment for patients, employees, and visitors.  Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Education Requirements

  • High School degree required

  • Associates Degree or equivalency in Criminal Justice or related field preferred


Minimum Experience Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Familiar with Life Safety Codes and Joint Commission Environment of Care Compliance Regulations

  • Preferred: 2 years security related experience in a healthcare setting or related field


  • American Heart Association BLS required within 90 day orientation period

  • Current valid Driver’s License

  • Essentials of Aggression Management in Healthcare certified within six months

  • CIT certified within two years

  • Preferred PPCT-DT and PPCT-SKD certified within two years

  • Preferred RIPP Restraint certified within two years

  • Preferred SICD certified within two years


Position Duties (Essential Functions)

  • Patrols hospital building and grounds according to established round schedule in order to detect and prevent theft, vandalism, fire, and other threats to hospital security.  Records time of patrols.  Reports potential hazardous conditions and suspicious activities to the appropriate department or supervisor.  Makes periodic unscheduled rounds.  Checks all fire alarm and fire extinguishers and reports need for maintenance or replacement.

  • Monitors hospital facilities through use of security cameras.  Notes suspicious activity and responds to unusual or potential dangerous conditions.

  • Ensures that all doors are locked and areas secured as required.  Unlocks areas according to the predetermined schedule or at the request of authorized personnel.

  • Responds to call for aid from various hospital areas, particularly the Emergency Department.  Assists with de-escalating or restraining disturbed patients and visitors.  Intervenes with physical management techniques whenever deemed necessary.

  • Escorts individuals from hospital premises when necessary. 

  • Escorts patients to Detox Center and Acute Treatment Unit (ATU) on a routine basis.


  • Investigates and prepares reports detailing accidents, thefts, lost property, safety and security violations, and so forth. 

  • Completes incident reports and follows up on all incomplete reports.

  • Escorts employees and visitors to their cars upon request.  Provides general assistance to people with car trouble such as conducting jump starts.

  • Provides general assistance to others such as giving directions, assisting disabled visitors and patients, directing parking lot and driveway traffic and so forth.

  • Secures patient valuables according to established hospital and departmental policies.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of MRMC security systems, policies, procedures, techniques and fire alarm systems including smoke detectors, extinguishing equipment and fire drill procedures.

  • Greets patients, visitors, and employees courteously and respectfully and is alert to concerns of everyone in the hospital premises.

  • Serves as “charge” wherever assigned.  Coordinates routine operations, directs the activities of other personnel, and assumes function charge of the shift(s) as assigned.

  • Maintains a level of professional conduct that promotes MRMC vision and mission statements and Community Relations.

  • Practices confidentiality of all information (HIPAA).

  • Works cooperatively with outside law enforcement officials.

  • Assists in other safety/security needs as directed.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, compliance codes, Code of ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.

  • Performs all job duties in accordance with sound safety practices.

  • Participates in in-service meetings, educational programs, workshops and attends all meetings and trainings as required.


Physical Requirements


Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs constantly.
