    The McGuire VA Medical Center consists of a complex tertiary care healthcare facility with 349 operating beds and four outpatient clinics in Fredericksburg (2), Charlottesville and Emporia.     Responsibilities

    The Research RN is administratively accountable to the Principal Investigator of the Research Study and is supervised by the Associate Chief of Staff, Research. The primary responsibility of the research nurse/coordinator is to manage all aspects of conducting the research study. The research coordinator is required to have an in-depth knowledge of protocol requirements and good clinical practices as set forth by federal regulations. As the primary resource for the protocols, the research nurse/coordinator will act as liaison between the investigators, department of cardiology, the institutional review board (IRB) and the sponsor. Along with the investigator, the research nurse/coordinator will screen, enroll and follow study subjects, insuring protocol compliance and close monitoring while the subjects are on the study. There will be a strong emphasis on caring for the cardiac patients enrolled in the study along with the regulatory work and management of multiple studies. A high level of previous experience in regulatory IRB submissions and Informed Consent Form (ICF) approvals between the sponsor and clinical trial sites will be required for this position as the individual must be able to step in immediately, understand the dynamics, and move forward quickly.
    In addition, the nurse/coordinator is responsible for all data and source documentation, adverse experience reporting, and maintenance of complete regulatory files. Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of patients served. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 12:00 noon (20 hours per week)
    Salary: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected. Salary to be determined by a Nurse Professional Standards board based upon qualifications and experience.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • .Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia
    Preferred Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of recent, full time RN Research Coordinator experience preferred.

    BLS/ACLS Requirements: Current certification in BLS is required for all staff providing direct patient care, and police. Additionally, current ACLS is required for patient care staff that work in specified or high risk areas (SICU/ICU/CCU/MICU/PACU/ED/and all procedure suites using moderate sedation, etc.). If you are selected for a position which requires BLS/ACLS certification, you will be required to have proof of certification prior to being boarded for appointment with VA. If selected, obtain such certification in order to avoid any delays in the hiring process.

    GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
    Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

    The criteria are as follows:

    Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;
    Professional Development: performance, education/career development;
    Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
    Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

    Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, etc, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
