    This position is located in the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, within the Sterile Processing Service aligned under the Associate Director of Patient Care Services (AD/PCS). This position is required to work as needed on other than normal working tours of duty, either in the evenings or on weekends. Such scheduling for other than normal working tour of duty will be as needed by the Chief, Sterile Processing Service (SPS). Incumbent may be assigned to ANY shift and work weekends and holidays.

    Responsibilities

    Major Duties include but are not limited to:
    Assembles a full range of sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room.
    Assembles delicate micro-surgical sets such as micro-surgical ear set, ENT plastic set for procedures requiring plastic surgery, micro-surgical eye instruments, etc.
    Receives contaminated supplies such as instruments, basins, syringes, needles, thermometers, and equipment from wards , operating rooms and clinics and inspects these items for damage and insures that they are in good working condition.
    Determines correct method for cleaning and pre-sterilization.
    Maintains a current knowledge and answers to questions regarding VA procedures, policies and directives.
    Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and use of ultrasonic equipment.
    Receives periodic training in such areas as the use and functioning of new surgical supplies, instruments and equipment.
    Obtains assistance and/or needed information from the lead on problems that may arise or backlogs. Assembles and selects the correct sterilizing method for a variety of costly and delicate equipment.
    Prepares a full range of Operating Room case carts daily and in emergency situations.
    Possess thorough knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
    Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants.
    Responsible to protect data from unauthorized release or access and following applicable regulations and instructions.
    Follows local Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation.
    Consults with other professionals for SPS and Infection Prevention and Control.
    Maintains training and other documentations on operating specific equipment.

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing of this announcement.
    BASIC QUALIFICATION:
    Status Eligible Candidate Status
    English ProficiencyTime-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. For this vacancy announcement, applicants must have completed at least 52 weeks at the (GS-05) grade level to be eligible for the (GS-06) grade level. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
    Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
    Experience and Education Requirement:
    Experience: you must have atleast One (1) year equivalent to at least the GS-05 level experience. Specialized experience is defined as to work as needed on other than normal working tours of duty, either in the evenings or on weekends. Such scheduling for other than normal working tour of duty will be as needed by the Chief, Sterile Processing Department (SPD);
