    The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, provides quality, patient-centered health care to Veterans throughout 23 parishes in southeast Louisiana with seven community-based outpatient clinics located in Slidell, Hammond, St. John Parish, Houma, Franklin, Bogalusa, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

    Our new VAMC is a 200-bed level 1b medical center including an acute mental health unit, inpatient medicine, surgery, and intensive care units, and a community living center. We serve as a tertiary care regional referral center for Veterans across the Gulf coast from the Florida panhandle to the Louisiana/Texas state line for specialized acute care services. SLVHCS has a specialized imaging center including PET/CT, 3 CT scanners, and 2 MRI as well as 8 operating rooms and six procedure rooms. The medical center is designed to meet the full array of VA missions: health care to America's heroes, education, research, and national preparedness and assistance and serves as a cornerstone for the emerging biosciences industry in New Orleans.

    SLVHCS serves as an educational medical center. As a medical center surrounded by education institutions, we have academic affiliations with Louisiana State University and Tulane University Medical Schools. We also have relationships with University of New Orleans, Dillard University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Tulane University Graduate Program in Health Administration and Loyola University to recruit and grow our staff of allied health and administrative professionals. These relationships help us to provide excellent primary, specialty and mental health services to our Veterans.

    Responsibilities

    NOTE: Vacancy is open until filled. Cut-Off for certificate issuance will be every 15 business days.

    This position is for a Physician (Psychiatrist - Geriatric) for Inpatient/Outpatient Medicine Surgery with cross coverage for a general psychiatric acute care ward in Psychiatry Service.

    As a Physician (Psychiatrist - Geriatric), your duties may include the following:
    • This psychiatrist will provide prompt diagnostic assessment and evaluation, communication with admitting teams, and discharge planning on all patients in collaboration with mid-level practitioners.
    • The primary purpose of the position is to provide behavioral health services for Geriatric Veterans admitted to Southeast Louisiana Veteran Healthcare System's Inpatient/Outpatient Psychiatry and Medical/Surgery Department.
    • On-call services are required.
    • Participation in supervision and teaching in support of the psychiatric residency program is also expected. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Psychiatry Service.
    • Provide general adult and geriatric psychiatric care, conducting diagnostic evaluations, psychiatric consults, medication management, and individual or group psychotherapy.
    • Provide direct clinical supervision of advanced practice nurses or physician assistants and other, as appropriate.
    • Serve a population which consists of male and female Veterans of all ages and common diagnoses include anxiety disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depression and other mood disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses, dementias, and mental disorder related to Traumatic Brain Injuries.
    • Establish professional working relationships with other clinical service providers within the medical center and outlying clinics, provide telephone and e-consult consultations, as needed.
    • Provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to veterans in need of psychiatric services.
    • Documents observations, assessments, and change in patients conditions; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes.
    • Provide a full range of psychiatric care to patients with a variety of physical and/or labor problems.
    • Possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the abilities to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.
    Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts on Days, Nights, Evenings and Occasional Weekends, On-Call or Holidays.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
