    This position is located in the Radiology section at the Long Beach VA Health Care System. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of super conducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Reviews films for quality control determinations by checking density, contrast, distortion, and other varying factors.
    • Determine the need to call for repair and/or maintenance of equipment and notify the Chief Technologist, Administrative officer, or designee.defects or deficiencies.
    • Utilizes skeletal, vascular, neurological, trans-sectional anatomy, physiology and cross-sectional anatomy such as the location and appearance of abnormalities which are illustrated by general diagnostic/MRI scanning; to recognize which best illustrate lesions and or abnormalities.
    • Performs first aid procedures for seizures, cardiac arrest, anaphylactic shock, and contrast reactions.
    • Performs more complex exams and acts as a point of contact for other technologist when performing complex examinations.
    • Works with the MRI safety committee to make sure the facility adheres to VHA policy and Joint Commission guidelines for MRI safety.
    • Prepares contrast materials which are used in MRI and general diagnostic studies.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school Diagnostic Radiologic Technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an Associate's Degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in Radiology. (Transcripts or certification required with application.)
    • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). (Proof of certification required with application.)
    • Advanced ARRT certification is required for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.     Grade Determinations: Advanced DRT GS-9

    Employees at this level are fully functional as an Advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
    • *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
    • Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
    • *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
    • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
    • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
    • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

    The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9.

    Physical Requirements: Work regularly involves extended periods of sitting. There is a considerable amount of moving,
    bending, and carrying moderately heavy articles. The transfer and positioning of patients who are disabled, unconscious or traumatized can require considerable effort of reaching, stretching and lifting in awkward positions due to respirators, suction machines and monitors. Assistance from special devices and other employees is recommended for heavy lifting.
