    The incumbent will function as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography), responsible for performing computed tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment.

    Responsibilities
    • Schedules exams, prioritizing scheduled patients and accommodating emergency patients
    • Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning and advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results, notifying them of scans requiring immediate attention
    • Performs neuroangiography, including spine, head and neck studies using x-ray equipment such as computerized tomography, pressure injectors, imaging, patient monitors, etc. to achieve high quality diagnosis such as studies of the spinal canal.
    • Performs peripheral/visceral angiography of abdominal systems/extremities (renal,hepatic,mesenteric,aortic,femoral, etc.) using x-ray equipment (computerized fluoroscopy,pressure injectors,patient monitors) to achieve studies of vascular systems
    • Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile techniques, storage of sterile supplies, disposal of body fluids and sharps, proper attire, hand washing practices and continuing education.
    • Performs virtual colonography scanning and assists radiologists pre, during and post procedure with necessary equipment.
    • Prepares contrast materials that are used in CT/angiography and other exams.
    • Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self;
    • Performs reconstructions of CT and angiographic studies when requested;
    • Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients;
    • Properly identifies patient images so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur;
    • Responsible for stocking and inventory of all CT and angiography supplies and related materials;
    • Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby (24 hours per day) coverage, requiring availability within one hour from receipt of call so that proper and effective emergency care can be given to the patient;
    • Assists with CT portion of PET/CT examinations as requested.
    • May be required to perform routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
    • Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). In addition, advanced ARRT certification in Computed Tomography (CT) is required.
    • Experience or Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.
    Grade Determinations:
    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: in addition to meeting the basic requirement, one year of experience at the next lower grade level (GS-08) that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to fully function as a DRT (CT) independently performing computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials. Note: This experience is only creditable if it was earned AFTER completion of the basic requirement.

    You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) based on your application for this position:

    KSA -1. Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while performing complex scans and procedures.
    KSA -2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
    KSA -3. Ability to assess factors that may contain dicate the procedure.
    KSA -4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
    KSA -5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions.
    KSA -6. Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post procedural care of patients.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1 - 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13"to 16"; Hearing (aid permitted).
