Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position:

To provide technical and subject matter expert support to the commercial organization, primarily to Product Line Management and Sales. Actively drive and manage the technology evaluation stage of the sales process.

Working in conjunction with the sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate, the Applications Engineer must be able to identify and provide reliable solutions for all technical issues to assure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process. Establish and maintain strong relationships, both internal and external, throughout the sales cycle.


Major Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain subject matter expert level of Harsh Optical & Composite Interconnect product knowledge and applications.
  • Articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users.
  • Provide design and specification development support to consultants, integrators and distributors.
  • Respond to functional and technical elements of RFIs/RFPs
  • Listen, understand and convey customer requirements.
  • Perform technical/ product training for internal sales people and engineers at targeted accounts.
  • Assist Technology in the design and development of new products, product improvements and tools
  • Maintain accurate records of target opportunities, projects, contacts and technical correspondence in company approved databases
  • Travel to customer locations and project sites to provide training and troubleshooting support
  • Develop a deep working understanding of the Harsh Optical & Composite Interconnect product line.
  • Assume the primary technical relationship with customers.
  • Resolve customer issues or difficulties in a manner that is consistent with the company mission, values, and financial objectives.
  • Maintain professional business relationships within target accounts.
  • Provide status of ongoing projects and future projects to management.
  • Identify customer's needs and sales opportunities to support future growth
  • Make necessary engineering calculations to support product selection/recommendation.
  • Provide input to product feature enhancements and process improvements.
  • Support R&D engineering in translating customer's needs into a manufacturable product.
  • Actively participate in industry standards activities.
  • Create or lead the creation of training and product presentation materials Role within group:
    • Function as product technical expert to commercial groups.
    • Convey Voice of Customer to technical groups.
    • Offer other expert assistance to project teams consistent with own experience (liaison with manufacturing facilities, statistical analysis, and product commercialization are common examples).


Day to Day Responsibilities:

Support Assigned Product Lines Manage project requirements for technical support based on suspense dates and potential impact to Corning’s commercial and technical objectives. Support departmental objectives. Participate on field project teams as required, typically in support of product development activities. Develop and maintain a reasonable level of expertise on optical fiber, hardware, connectivity, and cable products. Travel Requirements: Minimum of 40% Hours of work: 40 hrs. Qualifications:


Required Education:

  • BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience


Required Experience:

  • 5 -7 years of experience in a technical or engineering role.


Required Skills:

  • Solid understanding of network communications technology – Cable Television, Internet, Intranet, VPN, TCP/IP, Ethernet, etc.
  • Strong communication, Interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Read mechanical, electrical and “as-built” blueprints and have a solid understanding of basic electrical and mechanical systems
  • Proficiency with current desktop computer software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Visio, MS PowerPoint.
  • 100% proficiency in English, written and verbal (a writing sample will be required prior to interview)


Desired Skills:

  • Prior Aerospace or Military industry experience
  • Good understanding of Fiber Optic theory.
  • Customer service or sales support experience.
  • Proven Project Management skills.
  • CAD skills; SolidWorks – preferred


Soft Skills:

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical subjects to non-technical people.
  • Comfortable working with all organizational levels. Interaction is common with plant hourly, plant management, technical/professional, and executive leadership personnel.
  • Confident dealing with external customers.
  • Engaging personality with the ability to drive change.
