Senior Consultant - Sustainable Procurement and Packaging

Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability, the Senior Consultant, Sustainable Procurement and Packaging would support the development and execution of an innovative corporate strategy to reduce Scope 3 emissions from our supply chain and ensure that we are acting responsibly in our procurement choices. The incumbent will support the implementation of Purolator’s Responsible Procurement Standard and related initiatives. The incumbent will also collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify, measure, test and implement new green products and services, with a strong focus on solutions that will enable Purolator to meet its sustainable procurement and packaging targets.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the reduction of Scope 3 emissions across Purolator’s operations largely related to our purchased goods and services, capital goods and packaging solutions, with a consideration of the full lifecycle of the product or service.
  • Researching and analyzing data to help develop targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) for sustainable procurement and packaging, including assessment of performance against KPIs.
  • Supporting the on-going implementation of Purolator’s Responsible Procurement Standard, including training, supplier evaluations, and program oversight.
  • Engaging with internal stakeholders to ensure that environmental performance standards are incorporated in our purchasing requirements, including developing a framework to guide decision making.
  • Participating in the assessment and selection process for RFP and RFI requests for vendors in high-risk sustainability categories.
  • Supporting supplier risk assessments based on the Purolator’s Responsible Procurement Standard requirements.
  • Collaborating with suppliers, buyers, customers and internal stakeholders to develop, test to implement solutions that will lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Assessing laws and regulations focused on goods and packaging at multiple government levels (Federal, Provincial and Municipal) to determine their impact on our business and building mitigation strategies to reduce these impacts (i.e.: Extended Producer Responsibility, single-use plastics regulations, recycled content and labelling rules for plastics, Federal plastics registry etc.)
  • Working with packaging and procurement teams to identify and implement sustainable packaging solutions for Purolator branded products and Purolator’s customers.
  • Utilizing data and tools to measure the life cycle impact of existing and proposed solutions.
  • Assessing eligibility in certification programs and partnerships related to packaging solutions (i.e.: Canopy, Certified B Corporation, ECOLOGO, FSC etc.)
  • Representing Purolator on industry committees and working groups related to sustainable supply chains.
  • Remaining current on sustainable supply chain trends and best practices.
  • Collaborating with various external stakeholders to support execution of programs.
  • Providing sustainability subject-matter-expertise in the review and update of internal protocols and policies focused on Purolator’s supply chain.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree preferably at a Masters Level - Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering/Science, Environment & Business, Circular Economy.
  • Detailed understanding of environmental impacts in the supply chain (GHG emissions, waste, packaging etc.)
  • Sound knowledge of the regulatory frameworks and laws at multiple government levels focused on goods and packaging throughout the lifecycle (i.e.: materials sourcing, manufacturing, shipment, usage and end-of-life treatment).
  • Deep knowledge of ESG issues, including GHG emissions reduction strategies and measurement, and policy and program development.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in delivering Sustainability solutions and programs.
  • Experience eliminating single-use plastics and implementing sustainable packaging alternatives.
  • Data analysis and visualization skills - ability to perform research and analyze data to gain business insights and visualize these in leadership communications.
  • Strategic thinker with demonstrated success in developing and executing corporate environmental sustainability programs and initiatives.
  • Confidence to work independently and autonomously, self-driven.
  • Collaborative, builds trusting relationships.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and maximize their capabilities.
  • Influencer with strong analytical skills, detail-oriented.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills, with the ability to manage changing priorities.
