JOB SUMMARY:

Under general direction, the Public Relations Manager - Public Information Officer (PIO) is responsible for building and promoting relationships with key audiences - students, employees, parents, partners, and the community. Ensures public awareness of the initiatives and success of the College by developing and executing integrated communication strategies aligned with the College's vision, mission, and strategic plan. Provides a unified, non-conflicting image to the public and presents information of public interest in accordance with the law and the College policy and procedures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with developing and executing both short- and long-term communications plans to promote, inform, and engage all stakeholders on college initiatives; (20%)
  • Writes press releases, news articles, and other materials and distributes them to local, regional, and national media outlets; (20%)
  • Serves as a liaison between the college and the media, responding to media inquiries and arranging interviews with college officials; (15%)
  • Provides executive communications support to include interview prep, speech writing, talking points, fact sheets, and risk/benefit assessment of key decisions from a communication perspective; (5%)
  • Contributes to the college's online news center and social media accounts, including creating and scheduling posts, responding to comments and messages, and monitoring analytics; (10%)
  • Collaborates with the Strategic Events Team, plans and executes media events such as product launches, groundbreakings, ribbon-cuttings, and conferences, aggressively seeking opportunities to "make news" that generates coverage; (5%)
  • Coordinates press and public communications during severe weather events and other emergencies, working closely with college leadership and other stakeholders to maintain transparency and manage public perception. (5%)
  • Updates and enforces the IRSC editorial style guide. (5%)
  • Monitors media coverage of the college and prepares reports summarizing key metrics and trends. (5%)
  • Stays informed about trends and best practices in public relations, social media, and higher education communication, and makes recommendations for continuous improvement. (5%)
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, media relations, or related field;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in communications, social media, public relations, journalism, or community relations;
  • The ability to speak, listen, write, and read both English and Spanish is essential and the ability to translate from English to Spanish and Spanish to English is preferred;
  • Ability to run PR campaigns that deliver measurable results and meet objectives, experience handling press conferences is preferred;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and social media platforms;
  • Familiarity with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite), email distribution software, and web content management systems is a plus;
  • Knowledge of AP style and/or experience in copyediting and proofreading;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously;
  • Ability to think both creatively and strategically;
  • Ability to interact diplomatically with the public, students, support staff, faculty, and College administrators in a professional, diplomatic, and timely manner.
  • Understanding of Florida's Government-in-the-Sunshine laws;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, use good judgment, and handle sensitive information with discretion; and
  • A strong work ethic;
  • Knowledge of current issues and market forces impacting higher education preferred; and

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
