Ascential Medical and Life Sciences is looking for a Senior Commodity Buyer specializing in Fabricated and Machined Parts to join their San Diego team.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Commodity Buyer who specializes in Fabricated and Machined Parts is responsible for sourcing, procuring, and managing the supply of custom machined components, frames, weldments, sheet metal, castings, coatings, stampings, moldings, and raw materials within the medical and life sciences industry, particularly those that require precision engineering. These components are typically manufactured through processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, stress relieving, heat treating, bending, forming, welding, etc. The role involves working with suppliers to ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of high-quality parts from prototype through ramp to production.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

These may include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for implementation of the sourcing processes and improvement initiatives based on the strategy and tactical plans developed by global and regional category management, supported by relevant category managers.
Develop/maintain supplier base by actively sourcing, identifying and evaluating suppliers and conduct negotiation process in assigned commodity to obtain the maximum benefit for the company.
Selecting and monitoring vendors and suppliers and ensuring their ability to meet engineering and quality standards.
Verifying parts and materials received meet requirements in a cost-effective manner.
Perform cost scenario analysis, and benchmarking.
Support R&D new product design by identifying and purchasing components and parts for initial prototype build.
Work with existing and new vendors to lower materials cost through value engineering, reverse engineering, new design, alternative substitution, or relaxing of tolerance or standardizing of materials.
Manage Supplier Manufacturing Service Agreements and Supplier Quality Management to continuously improve quality standards.
Manage part qualifications within their commodities to ensure conforming parts and process margin prior to production.
Must be willing and able to mentor and train other buyers.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university in Procurement, Business or Engineering field, or the equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a procurement engineering (or similar) role, commodity management, or similar role(s) in a fast‐paced manufacturing environment with a wide range of experience across Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and New Product Introduction.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience sourcing, and negotiating, components needed for complex machined & sheet metal fabrication, plastic molding, and other commodities a plus.

APICS CPIM Certification and experience with lean manufacturing is preferred. Experience in global planning capabilities is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Excellent knowledge of product development life cycle and ability to manage procurement deliverables from sourcing, costing, and qualifying BOMs to ensure production readiness.
Must possess a thorough understanding of the concepts of inventory flow throughout the supply chain.
Strong understanding of supply chain methodologies for managing Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost objectives – including possessing the ability to source, qualify, assess, and audit potential suppliers.
Demonstrated negotiation skills with all levels of suppliers and internal customers.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams, colleagues and clients.
Ability to successfully contribute and attain company goals in a fast‐paced contract manufacturing environment.
Proficient in specifications, tolerance requirements and process capacities for machined/fabricated parts and assemblies.
Stay updated on market trends and developments in the machined/fabricated parts industry to make informed decisions about component sourcing.
Working knowledge of regulatory programs such as ISO 9001 and ISO 13485.
Execute deliverables for NCRs and ECOs, including RMAs, PO revisions/cancellations, and rework purchase orders.
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of P2P (procure-to-pay) including procurement ethics and standards, contract development and negotiations and competitive bidding.
Ability to work with the design team and suppliers on DFM/DFC/DFQ.
Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to analyze and summarize complex data such as bills of material, inspection data, etc.
Requires strong process and design margin capabilities related to part designs and tolerancing.
Detail oriented with strong follow‐through capabilities.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

Software Knowledge: Advanced skills in using Microsoft software applications Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. Comprehensive MRP knowledge; prior experience with IFS is a plus.

EFFORT REQUIRED:

Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Intermittently answer telephone. Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
