Your Opportunity as the Department Manager - Packaging

(full time, exempt position)

Location: Buffalo, NY manufacturing plant

Work Arrangements: 100% on-site
  • Hours will primarily include Monday - Friday, day shift
  • Must be able to work off shift including nights, weekends, or holidays to meet manufacturing demands and business needs
  • Must be willing to travel (up to 10%)


Reports to: Operations Manager

Direct Reports: 5 - 6 (mix of Team Leaders, Area Leaders, and Process Engineers)
  • indirect reports = 50 - 75; as the Department Manager will have responsibility for packaging department


In this role you will:
  • Lead a team of employees to deliver key business results in Quality, Safety, Reliability, and Cost targets through providing direction on production goals, technical improvement, and various projects related to the packaging operation
  • Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to developing scopes of work, people management and development, and budget and cost controls
  • Participates on marketing meetings and provides operation insights on new products
  • Works with Technical Services Organization (TSO) and Research & Development (R&D) teams on product development as needed
  • Develop & deliver department Master plan and manage the daily results of the work - includes equipment layout, team design/staffing, results management
  • Responsible for managing department budget
  • Optimize the work in the department and drive toward zero defects
  • Act as a coach and facilitator to the team in areas such as people management, problem solving, and decision making
  • People Management-including skill development, career development, performance management, and employee issue resolution
  • Develop and implement improvement projects and drive completion through the team
  • Ensure the department meets safety, quality, and sanitation standards
  • Ensures that essential business information and general expectations are clearly communicated and understood by all members of the team
  • Can lead a multidisciplinary team to successfully execute departmental expectations
  • Ensures operational excellence throughout project/initiative startups
  • Builds organizational capabilities and eliminates losses using Smucker Quality Management Systems (SQMS) methodology

  • Maintains a customer focused relationship with the packaging department
  • Compensation range: $98,500 - $143,000

What we are looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

Education
  • A Bachelor's Degree


Experience
  • 3 years of prior manufacturing operational experience
  • 3 years people management experience

  • Priority setting and Problem solving: Demonstrate ability to be decisive, proactive, and strategic in decision making
  • Demonstrate ability to lead a large organization to deliver business needs
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively across organization boundaries and with diverse teams
  • Experience working in an environment that facilitates peer to peer collaboration and managing upward through the organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills Safety and Quality experience will be essential to deliver solid systems and to influence the organization in adhering to Safety & Quality principles
  • Ability to demonstrate technical aptitude through on-the-job qualification process


Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:
  • Food (human and / or pet) manufacturing experience
  • Experience working with and supporting unions
  • Experience working in Packaging or with packaging equipment
  • Experience managing people and teams in a High-Performance Organization (HPO) work environment
