STATEWIDE DIRECTOR OF NURSING POSITION SUMMARY

The Statewide Director of Nursing is responsible for the administrative oversight for medical services at the 21 detention centers. This role requires a high-level functioning leader with a business perspective and strategic approach to service, including the development of community and external relationships. The Statewide Director of Nursing plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the overall medical services provided at the detention centers. The Statewide Director of Nursing works collaboratively to manage medical services, while working with other corporate leaders, Office of Health Services (OHS) team, and detention leadership to establish and maintain effective medical services.

This position has a high emphasis on building relationships with OHS and ensuring overall compliance with the contract and regulation requirements.

STATEWIDE DIRECTOR OF NURSING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans and manage the delivery of comprehensive medical services within the framework established by the corrections system and contracts/agreements.
Creates and promotes a positive and collaborative working environment among the medical team. Ensure good relationships are fostered between the medical team and mental health, detention and OHS staff.
Organizes the delivery of medical services within the corrections environment to achieve quality and efficient utilization of resources.
Interprets regulations and standards and communicates nursing philosophy and objectives to medical staff.
Monitor and ensure Regional Directors of Nursing respond to critical incidents at detention centers in a timely manner.
Monitor OHS Quarterly Reviews and ensure Regional Directors of Nursing provide a timely response/resolution to any deficiencies identified. Provide direct assistance/guidance as needed to resolve ongoing deficiencies.
Provides guidance and direction to the regions/states regarding state licensure, accreditation, and regulatory agency requirements.
Monitors schedules and staffing levels at each detention center to ensure appropriate medical services are provided each week.
Supports the Regional Directors of Nursing with improving operations and meeting their goals at detention centers.
Develops, maintains, and evaluates an environment that empowers and supports the medical staff in analysis of assessment data to determine relevant problems and diagnosis.
Ensure necessary paperwork and documentation is completed in a timely manner for OHS and/or detention.
Ensures routine internal quality improvement monitoring is completed at each detention centers to ensure medical services are in compliance with contractual and regulation requirements.
Participates in multidisciplinary, multi-agency teams to represent the nursing function in all planning that may affect medical services at the site or statewide level.
Contributes operational and user perspective to the creation and modification of applications and systems.
Conducts meetings with Regional Directors of Nursing and other medical staff as necessary to promote goal accomplishment, policy compliance, and professional development.
Analyzes and solves quality problems and will be involved in quality improvement projects.
Monitors and makes recommendations to leadership regarding medical services to meet patient and contract needs.
Organizes the delivery of medical services within the corrections environment to achieve quality and efficient utilization of resources.
Develops resources to provide medical services that meet applicable standards.
Monitors the efficient delivery of appropriate and safe medical services.
Troubleshoots and assists site management with problem resolution – including staffing needs – at the site level within the assigned region.
Attends training and meetings as required.

STATEWIDE DIRECTOR OF NURSING REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s or Master's degree in nursing.
Two years of leadership experience.
Five years of healthcare administration setting experience.
Active unencumbered RN license in state where position is located; Specialty certification desired (i.e. CCHP, ACHE, etc.)
Excellent organizational, computing, and oral/written communication skills.
Ability to influence and negotiate effective solutions.
Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
Ability to mentor and develop others. Adept at performance / process improvement activities.
Ability to build healthy and successful interdisciplinary team functions and relationships (including all disciplines / departments particularly nursing, medical and mental health staff). High degree of personal responsibility and accountability.
Ability to build successful relationships with Office of Health Services (OHS) and Detention staff to ensure professional and effective teamwork, communication and collaboration.
