The UPMC School of Surgical Technology at Carlow University seeks a dynamic full-time educator to help support our rapidly expanding program in Pittsburgh, PA. We are seeking driven and enthusiastic Surgical Technologists who possess a deep commitment to education, quality, and safety to help train and mentor the next wave of skilled Surgical Technologists.

As a full-time faculty member, you will be employed by UPMC and hold a faculty appointment at Carlow University and work collaboratively with a team of highly skilled higher education professionals.  In addition to competitive benefits, you will also enjoy ample time off and a schedule that doesn't require weekend or on-call commitments with occasional work from home days.  Candidates must have and maintain an active nationally recognized certification in Surgical Technology and provide college transcripts prior to interviewing. 

The Pittsburgh campus is a partnership between UPMC and Carlow University.  The chosen candidate for this position will be based out of The Energy Innovations Center where classes, labs, and clinical instruction occur and during clinicals travel between UPMC hospitals for student support.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Extends trust by acknowledging the contributions of others; listens first, creates transparency in communications, confronts reality, and clarifies expectations. Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message. Perform related duties as required.
  • Utilize classroom and lab instruction, student assessment mechanisms, and classroom management techniques to provide an engaged classroom experience to students.
  • Ensure that each student has been presented with the material to successfully meet the learning objectives of each course within a student?s program of study
  • Ensure that instructional materials and equipment are ready for student use, sufficient in quantity, are properly maintained and are in working order prior to class time
  • Actively participate in meetings, review and analyze assessment data, compile reports, and meet academic and administrative deadlines
  • Receive feedback and direction constructively. Serve as a formal and informal mentor for new staff members and mentor new preceptors to be successful in their role. Participate in department-based Performance Improvement projects. Participate in self-review. Improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental need. Demonstrate a high level of initiative, work independently, and establish priorities to meet department and organizational goals. Obtain and maintain appropriate certifications. Participate in professional and community organizations. Develops professional coaching and feedback skills.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the impact of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department and organization. Assume responsibility for complex assignments and view problems as challenges. Apply creative and innovative strategies in problem solving to achieve desired goals. Facilitates student experiences as appropriate.
  • Associates Degree required;
  • Educator must be a Certified Surgical Technologist OR Registered Nurse First Assist
  • Relevant Teaching Experience
  • Minimum of 4 years of Surgical Technologist/Scrub Experience


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse license for RN. Registered Nurse (RN) for RNFA OR CST CSFA, or CST/CSFA for Surgical Technologist Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant OR Certified Surgical First Assist OR Certified Surgical Technologists (CST)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
