DESCRIPTION

The Senior Project Engineer and Sustainability Coordinator will be a leadership position that integrates and optimizes SDSC's facility infrastructures utilizing an advanced (AMEP) interdisciplinary skillset. Will be responsible for delivery of state of the art and emerging technologies in a scalable and sustainable fashion. Uses advanced engineering concepts while aligning with campus objectives, directing and executing the activities of an engineering team in a specialized engineering field on a training and / or research program. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

SDSC's Senior Project Engineer and Sustainability Coordinator will lead collaboration on datacenter and other facilities initiatives that enable the center's international, national, state, and local missions. Under direction, incumbent will plan, organize, supervise, and perform critical facilities engineering projects in concert with peers in UCSD's Planning, Design and Construction and Facilities Management groups. Projects range greatly in size/scope, requiring integrative knowledge from various engineering disciplines and practical ingenuity to solve problems as they present themselves. Specific activities include leading edge projects such as multi-million (30M+) data center facility builds, building retrofits, multi-megawatt electrical distribution designs, innovative cooling systems planning, and state-of-the art facilities monitoring/control instrumentation as well as maintenance projects such as power and cooling systems retrofits, building repairs, and process design/improvement. Will be responsible for ensuring vendor neutrality and best practice selection is maintained.

The Senior Project Engineer and Sustainability Coordinator will carry full responsibility for accomplishment of project development and directed objectives, ensuring manufacturers, contractors and staff members contribute to overall project success. Incumbent will represent the center at meetings and conferences involving campus departments, University administrators, other higher education institutions, industry, other partners, and funding agencies. Incumbent will be prepared to contextually discuss engineering and financial design considerations with peers, management, and partners, as applicable and provide quality recommendations.

The Senior Project Engineer and Sustainability Coordinator will spearhead SDSC sustainability efforts, investigating and recommending new methods for driving efficiency in electrical, mechanical, and other systems. The incumbent must use both engineering and financial skills along with analytical tools to quantify recommendations and project results to management. Incumbent will partner with UCSD's sustainability team, contribute to the University's overall sustainability plans, adeptly reporting on accomplishments and opportunities within SDSC and UCSD as well as sharing outwardly with partners and organizations such as EEHPC and The Green Grid.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  2. Working knowledge and experience with building power; including distribution, switching systems and safety devices at 12kV, 480V, and 120/208V. Working knowledge and experience with datacenter electrical distribution design, security and alarm systems, telecommunications and data network systems, complex electrical system relays, as well as electrical substations and distribution stations.

  3. Knowledge of practical design/engineering development in relation to facilities IT resource planning.

  4. Working knowledge of operational applications and implementation of acceptance testing of HVAC systems, digital HVAC control systems, plumbing, controls, heat exchangers, pumps, heating and cooling plants, cogeneration plants, laboratory systems, clean rooms, computer machine rooms, security systems, and closed circuit television monitors/systems.

  5. Ability to perform general plan checks to identify potential design and construction problems.

  6. Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations, and ability to provide technical advice based on sound understanding of construction principles and practice.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
