The BASC holds a significant role in the delivery of college-wide undergraduate academic advising services and in instructional support for the college's undergraduate programs. The scope of the responsibility for the BASC unit is college wide. The college has over 6,000 undergraduate students. 12 majors and offers over 40,000 student credit hours of undergraduate instruction annually.

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director and Associate Dean (AD), provide in-depth, wide ranging and complex academic advising to undergraduate students in the Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) in the College of Biological Sciences (CBS). Under general supervision of the Director and Associate Dean (AD), provide academic advising support to address difficult problems in advising to identify systemic barriers and issues, and propose solutions. Provide in-depth, wide-ranging, and complex academic advising to undergraduates, prospective students, faculty, and other administrative units. Interpret, analyze, and implement a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies; assess individual academic performance and progress toward degree requirements; evaluate and approve transfer credits; refer students to campus and community resources; and represent the college during academic and outreach programming. As a member of a team, make decisions on academic standing, readmission, and other important matters for individual students. BASC is a hybrid workspace, work is conducted both remotely and in-person, as determined by the BASC Director. This is one of many positions essential to BASC operations. These positions work with students as they consider admissions; enroll in classes; change majors; encounter academic difficulty and complicated situations; seek exceptions to policy; and proceed toward their degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience identifying and determining appropriate level of advising or
    referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, triage, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.
  • Knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse communities in an academic environment.
  • Experience with undergraduate curricular elements and structures such as courses, units, prerequisites, majors, and minors, with experience examining and assessing college transcripts and compute or review on-line computations of grade point averages and grade point balances.
  • Experience prioritizing and organizing a heavy workload to achieve timely progress on multiple projects, distributing appropriate effort among the projects to meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact positively, cooperatively, and professionally with team members, administrators, staff, students, and the general public all of varying ages, cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Writing, editing and proofreading skills to prepare clear and accurate correspondence, reports, and concise summaries.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws governing confidentiality of student records.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Baccalaureate degree in biology, student advising or related science or advising field, or equivalent education and/or advising experience.
  • Experience working independently evaluating, planning, and coordinating both small- and large-scale events.
  • Experience supervising student staff in a variety of venues and circumstances.
  • Experience with implementation of advising and transition programs aimed at specific populations of students such as first-year and transfer students and students experiencing academic difficulty.
