Position Summary:

Performs review of all Emergency Department charts to ensure appropriate documentation and charging.  

Assigns procedure codes according to ICD and CPT guidelines.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews all records with integrity and accuracy.
  • Assigns the appropriate EM levels according to guidelines.
  • Performs charging process.
  • Assists physicians with questions on documentation.
  • Maintains current knowledge of coding principles.

Reports to:  Assistant Director of Patient Registration 


Minimum Education
High School Diploma, GED, or highest level of education verification required.Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.Required Skills
Licenses: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS preferred.
Medical terminology, coding, and Anatomy & Physiology courses required.Required Skills
Must be familiar with departmental processes in order to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness.Minimum Work Experience
At least three (3) years of coding in a hospital setting
