Accommodating LGBTQ Employees with Dress Code Modifications

Most employers’ lists of policies and procedures include a dress code for employees. However, employers should be sensitive to LGBTQ employees and candidates when creating and enforcing the dress code. No bias should exist with how employees and candidates dress. They should dress based on their gender identities, and reflect a professional appearance in the workplace.

To help explore these issues, College Recruiter recently hosted a College Recruiting Bootcamp on LGBT and other diversity hiring issues on Tuesday, September 29, at the Twilio headquarters in San Francisco.

Handling discrimination and harassment against LGBT employees/candidates

Discrimination and harassment in the workplace should not be tolerated. LGBT employees and candidates need protection concerning comments on their sexual orientation and gender identity. Employers are responsible for establishing a policy that disciplines workplace discrimination and harassment.

Keeping LGBT candidates/employees personal information private

A candidate’s gender identity and sexual orientation shouldn’t affect whether or not they obtain or retain a job. Employers should respect the rights of LGBT candidates and employees and should keep this information private. LGBTQ equality in STEM workforce

A recent press release discusses a new project with the Rowan University Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering in New Jersey partnering with other universities to advance LGBTQ equality in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Research shows that STEM students and professionals are not as comfortable on campus compared to students and professionals in other fields. The project also promotes a diverse workforce in STEM fields by encouraging LGBTQ equality through recruitment efforts.
