How to respond when your employer asks you for a candidate referral

 

Don’t be surprised if your employer asks you to refer your friends or other contacts as candidates for open positions. Employers depend on a variety of sources to recruit new people, and a favorite, time-tested method is to get employee referrals. Many organizations find that employee referrals are more likely to fit in and perform well in their jobs. We checked in with two experts to advise entry-level employees with this question. Vicky Oliver, author of 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions (Sourcebooks, 2005), and Toni Newborn, Diversity and Consulting Services Manager at the City of St. Paul  give their advice about how to respond to the request for a candidate referral.  (more…)

Recruitment marketing via text messaging: Pros and cons

 

Recently, a journalist asked me about services offered by organizations such as Canvas and TextRecruit that make it pretty easy for employers to market their employment opportunities to job seekers via text messaging campaigns. There are pros and cons to recruitment marketing via text messaging.

College Recruiter used to sell cell phone text messaging campaigns to our employer customers but we stopped doing so about a decade ago. It had become clear that bulk, commercial texting fell under the same laws as bulk, commercial faxing. Neither are illegal, but both require an incredible amount of record keeping and the recipients had to opt in to receive the messages. Emails, on the other hand, allow employers to market to any candidates who have not opted out.  (more…)

What about the gig economy employers should build into their workforce analysis

 

HR leaders, as you do a workforce analysis, do you see the gig economy as a threat or an opportunity? I checked in with Mona Tawakali, Vice President of Digital Strategy with KRT Marketing to get insight into this question. Tawakali has not only done extensive research on the trend and the impact of the gig economy, but her team is also continually hearing from employers about how the new world of work is changing their strategies.

Overall, your organization should see the growing gig economy as an opportunity. Business leaders understand the increasing need for agility, and the gig economy lends itself nicely to being nimble. With people working gigs or projects, it becomes easier to scale up or down more quickly. You can “change your workforce for the skills you need” at the moment, says Tawakali. This is especially beneficial for startups, small businesses and growing companies. The effect of this, she says, is a more efficient economy overall. (more…)

Recruitment methods for non-traditional students

 

The entry-level talent pool increasingly consists of “non-traditional students.” Recruitment methods and strategies that narrowly focus on attracting talent from top schools, or from a short list of degrees, no longer provide employers with the workforce they need to grow. HR metrics from the stay interview

 

Ideally, managers check in with their staff frequently, and not just to measure them against expectations but also to open up a dialogue about how each employee feels regarding their standing at the organization. Unfortunately, not all managers see this kind of check-in as a priority, or even their job. Recruitment analytics: How you can use data to adjust your hiring process

 

For so long, recruiters have trusted our guts to make hiring decisions (myself included). However, it is hard to ignore the value that big data, and recruitment analytics, bring to talent acquisition. I checked in with Kevin Grossman, President of The Talent Board, the nonprofit that oversees the Candidate Experience Awards each year. He gives his insight below into how recruiting professionals can and should respond to data in their hiring process.
