What to do before applying for a graduate scheme

Right after university comes the mad rush to get a well paying job. Grad students running frantically from pillar to post to land that one good position in a company.  Among them, many are lucky enough to get a position on one of the coveted graduate schemes offered by the companies. However, is it luck really? Some hard work, organisational skills and planning can still land you that graduate scheme that you want so badly.

The media and almost everybody around will tell you the nightmarish tales of recession and spout statistics of unemployment. Don’t let that discourage you from applying or thinking that you will never make it. The ideal time to start applying is after you get back from your summer vacations in your final year. Start looking at potential jobs and graduate schemes that you would like to apply for. (more…)

5 New Rules Concerning Federal Student Loans

Whether you’re taking out a federal student loan or entering repayment, get up to speed on the new changes to the federal loan program. Kiplinger’s outlines the five new rules you need to know about federal student loans.

The new rules include:

·         Loans get pricier—the rate on federally sponsored loans jumps from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1, barring a last-minute (and unlikely) save from Congress. Despite the headlines, there’s no need to panic—the rate applies only to new loans, not those that are outstanding. (more…)

STEM Careers: Women in the Workforce

You have probably heard about the need for more workers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, especially women.  Because of the demand in these areas, women have a chance to close the gender gap that exists, as well as be part of the closing wage gap with their male counterparts.  However, in order to see more women enter STEM careers, there need to be opportunities for them to succeed.  The following infographic has more information.
