Searching for an Internship While Abroad? Tips to Land Current Opportunities

Have you ever thought about landing an internship while abroad?  Interning in another country can not only allow you to gain some work experience in a particular career field, but also learn about a different culture.  In order to make this goal a reality, you must prepare ahead of time.  So, what do you need to know?  Here are some tips to help you get one of the current internship opportunities available during your time abroad.

Begin researching – Think about the companies where you would like to work.  Go online and learn about the type of candidates they are looking for.  Use this information in the application process (resume, cover letter, interview, etc.).  By doing your homework early, you will avoid a lot of frustration later.

Set up informational interviews – If you want to be more informed about a specific company and internship, then consider scheduling an informational interview with someone from the inside.  Bring a list of questions to ask that will give you a better idea of what it is like to work at the company and the expectations for the internship.  Remember, though, you are not interviewing for a position, so don’t ask for one just yet.  Taking the step to set up an informational interview shows initiative and will impress a potential employer.

Go to your career service office – Don’t forget about this valuable resource.  The people at your career service office should have information and connections to help you get an internship while you’re abroad.  Contact them for a list of opportunities, and post your cover letter and resume on the school’s online portal so employers can find you.

Tell others you will be or are going to be abroad – Specify on your job search documents (resume and cover letter) the dates you will not be in your home country.  Request interaction through email, social media, and other forms of communication.  By doing so, your contacts will understand why you are communicating with them at a certain time of the day.

Here are a few companies mentioned in a recent article you might be interested in to find internships abroad:

  • PINC Internship
  • Gap Journey
  • Rio EnCantos

Even though it may be a challenge, landing an internship while you are abroad is not impossible.  Use the tips above as you prepare for this process.  With the proper planning, you will give yourself the best chance to have a rewarding experience both professionally and personally.
