Advice for Employers and Recruiters

Millennials, What Do You Want in a Job?

CollegeRecruiter.comYou have probably heard that Millennials (a.k.a. Gen Y) are the generation who believes in entitlement.  This includes finding the right jobs for them.  While searching for employment, Millennials will look for things they feel are important.  Once hired, some workers will be loyal, but do not expect all of them to be, especially if the job doesn’t meet their expectations.

So, what do Millennials want in a job?  A recent study by Software Advice highlights the factors this group will consider when it comes to their job searches.  FYI to employers, it’s not all about the money.

“To me, the most surprising part of our research is that ‘Culture and Atmosphere’ is almost as important to Gen Y applicants as ‘Salary and Benefits.’ Having the right workplace environment is even more important to Millennials than advancing their careers or being satisfied by the nature of their work, which I think is fascinating. These applicants seem to be doing the math and realizing that if they’re spending eight hours or more of every day in the same place, they better like the place they’re in.”

“Companies looking to hire Gen Y applicants should make sure that the positions they’re offering fulfill at least some, if not all, of the top four categories in our research: ‘Salary and Benefits,’ ‘Culture and Atmosphere,’ ‘Fulfillment and Satisfaction’ and ‘Growth and Development.’ If you’re not sure if you’re paying enough, search online for salary ranges in your area for positions similar to the ones you’re offering. If you need some help creating the right environment or allowing employees opportunities for fulfillment and satisfaction, consult the list of Google’s perks included in our research. And make sure that whatever positions you’re offering allow for some upward mobility. If you aren’t offering what Gen Y really wants, they’ll go elsewhere.” – Holly Regan, Researcher and Managing Editor at Software Advice
