Bain & Company logoIt is important to most of us that we enjoy our work but difficult to know when you’re looking for a job whether we’ll be happier working for one employer versus another. A great way to know if an employer offers a great place to work is to ask the people who know the organizations best — their employees. For the past six years, Glassdoor has awarded its Employees’ Choice Awards to honor the 50 best places to work. For 2014, the best place to work was Bain & Company.

Are you searching for a job in management consulting?  If so, Bain & Company might be the right place for you.  As a global management consulting firm headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Bain specializes in advisory services, working with various clients.  Bain employs over 6,000 people around the world and has a reputation of being a highly respected company.

What does it take to work at Bain & Company?  Bain partner Bill Neuenfeldt has stated that intelligence, integrity, passion, and the ambition to make a difference are essential qualities for potential employees.

Normally, workers with an entry level job as an Associate Consultant (AC) usually come from a top graduate school.  The type of education suitable for the job should be relative to data-based analysis in areas like economics, business, science, or engineering, which can be helpful in the position.

Bain & Company offers career advancement opportunities starting from the entry level Associate Consultant (AC) job.   Here, you generally work for two years and then can be promoted to Senior Associate Consultant (SAC).  What are your options as a SAC?

•    Spend six months in a Bain office of choice
•    Leave Bain for six months to work for a different employer or non-profit organization
•    Take a two-month leave of absence to pursue personal interests

Once employed for three years at Bain & Company, as a SAC you can either choose to leave the firm for graduate school (top-performing SACs may receive funding for graduate business studies), or find employment at another firm.  You can remain at Bain as a SAC for a fourth year, and potentially achieve advancement to Consultant after earning an MBA.

Graduates who have completed their MBA or other professional/graduate training and decide to work for Bain & Company can transition into the Consultant position.  If you are willing to accept more responsibility over planning and management, then promotion to Case Team Leader (CTL) is a possibility.  CTLs can move on from Bain to pursue roles in industry or finance at the junior management level; another option is to become a Manager at the firm.  As a manager, you receive more exposure to clients and an opportunity to build and manage these relationships, which if done effectively over the years can lead to a position as Principal, and then Partner.

So, what happens when you are a partner at Bain & Company?  Becoming a partner at Bain means a chance to have an equity stake in the firm, thanks to it being an incorporated partnership.  Other opportunities for a promotion, which include Director and Managing Director, could exist beyond partner.
